Vetenskapsjournalisten Karin Bojs bestämde sig för att släktforska på djupet och låta DNA-trådarna knyta ihop henne själv med forntidens människor. Hon läste studier, intervjuade forskare och reste i ett tiotal länder för att följa spåren bakåt. Sedan 1980-talet har DNA-tekniken genomgått en enastående utveckling. Den har revolutionerat såväl kriminalteknikers arbete som biologisk och medicinsk forskning, och har på senare år börjat bidra till ny kunskap inom arkeologi och historia. Till och med släktforskande privatpersoner har börjat använda DNA som verktyg. Med hjälp av små variationer i DNA-sekvensen går det numera att hitta kusiner, sysslingar och bryllingar, och även släktingar som levde för mycket länge sedan – under den senaste istiden och ännu längre tillbaka. Resultatet av Karin Bojs arbete blev en bok om hennes ursprung och hennes familj. Men också om oss andra. Vi är ju släkt. Någonstans, någon gång levde vår senaste gemensamma förmoder och förfader. DNA-trådarna knyter ihop oss alla.
