Mit der Beschaffung des De Havilland D.H. 100 Vampire begann bei der Flugwaffe das Jet-Zeitalter und die Schweiz fand Anschluss an den internationalen Standard. Die Erprobung dieses Flugzeugtyps erfolgte im Jahr 1946 mit dem Typ Mk.I. Die Auslieferung an die Truppe begann ab 1949 mit dem Typ Mk.VI in einer Auflage von 75 Einheiten mit den Immatrikulationen J-1005 bis J-1079 und erstreckte sich über gut 2 Jahre. Weitere 100 Exemplare mit den Nummern J-1101 bis J-1200 wurden ab 1951 in Emmen als Lizenzbau von De Havilland produziert.

Die Ablieferung der Maschinen aus der ersten Tranche erfolgte in Form eines Überflugs von Hatfield (GB) dem Hauptsitz der De Havilland Aircraft Company nach Emmen.

Der damalige Chefpilot im Flugzeugwerk war John Cunningham. Im zweiten Weltkrieg ein absolutes Ass unter den Jagdfliegern der Royal Air Force. So führte er mit Abstand die Rangliste der britischen Piloten bezüglich Abschüsse von feindlichen Flugzeugen an. Ein Mann mit heldenhaftem Mut und Einfallsreichtum.

Letzterer diente ihm auch beim Auftrag, im Februar 1950 die Vampire mit der Kennung J-1048 in die Schweiz zu überführen. Beseelt von der Aussicht, ein paar Tage in der Schweiz, genauer in St. Moritz zu verbringen, schmiedete er den Plan seine Ski doch gleich mit auf die Reise zu nehmen. Doch wie kriegt man ein paar Ski in das Cockpit eines Kampfjets? Gar nicht. In typisch englischer Manier band er die Ski jeweils an einem der beiden Heckausleger fest und liess den Schriftzug «Operation Snowball» auf der Turbinenhaube anbringen. Auf diese Weise entstand eine der skurrilsten Geschichten in der über 100-jährigen Geschichte der Schweizer Luftwaffe.

Die J-1048 blieb fast 2 Dekaden im Einsatz und wurde erst 1969 liquidiert.

It's not bad, but one minor issue FOR ME

There is nothing generally not to dislike about this WDT. Priced right. Good quality materials. But there are two issues that made me choose a different one, even before using this one: The entire top and bottom are straight cylindrical pieces. Ergonomically I would have to use more, larger muscle movement from my wrist to stir the beans. Not a big deal for some, but with other similar choices at the same price, I thought I would be better off with a different model. The second issue is that then the needles are placed back in the tall "recepticle", the top piece merely sits on top and isn't secured. For some that might be good because the top can be lifted out without any opposing force. OTOH, if it tips over it might expose the needles or need two hands to get it back together. If I didn't have other choices, I'd keep this one. I knew, without even using it that it wasn't for me... but it might be for someone else. Again, the materials are quite good and you can tell by the heft of the item. I elected to go with a similar concept, but a more contoured design with a knurled top and brushes on the inside of the recepticle to hold the needles and top in place, but also easy to extract for use. My choice over the Tiverain WDT was personal and has nothing to do with the quality of the product.
