Altdorfers Alexanderschlacht, Dürers Selbstbildnis im Pelzrock und die Vier Apostel, Rogier van der Weydens Columbaaltar oder Hans Memlings Sieben Freuden Mariens sind die zentralen Gemälde einer Sammlung, die in ihrem Kernbestand auf eine Tradition von nahezu 500 Jahren zurückblicken kann.Der Band bildet den Auftakt zu einer fünfbändigen Katalogreihe, die den gesamten ausgestellten Bestand der Alten Pinakothek von mehr als 700 Gemälden vorstellt. Alle Gemälde werden farbig abgebildet und durch allgemeinverständliche Texte erläutert. Zahlreiche Detailaufnahmen erschließen die Schönheit der Bilder und den tiefen Ernst einer vergangenen Welt, in der sie entstanden.
