Ignác Fischer erlernte sein Handwerk in Herend und gründete 1867 in Pest seine eigene Keramikmanufaktur. Der Fantasie waren keine Grenzen gesetzt, und Fischer schuf eine Vielzahl dekorativer Keramik, die in großem Umfang exportiert wurde. Viele der Werke gelangten in die Vereinigten Staaten. Diese Erzeugnisse waren fantasievolle Kreationen, die auf ungarischen dekorativen Motiven basierten, aber auch Designs aus dem Nahen und Fernen Osten einbezogen. Das Museum für
ungarisches Kulturerbe in Cleveland war stolz darauf, eine repräsentative Auswahl der Werke der Fischer, ungarischer Porzellan- und Keramikkünstler des späten 19. Jahrhunderts, mit repräsentativen Beispielen ihrer Keramik- und Porzellanarbeiten präsentieren zu können.

WER WAREN IGNAC UND EMIL FISCHER?

Ignac Fischer erwarb seine Kenntnisse in Kunst und Handwerk in Ungarn in der Keramikwerkstatt seines Vaters in Tata-Tóváros. Anschließend vertiefte und verfeinerte er seine Kenntnisse der Keramikherstellung in der Manufaktur Herend, ebenfalls in Ungarn. Im Jahr

1864 gründete Ignác in Pest seine eigene Werkstatt. Zunächst beschäftigte er sich ausschließlich mit der Bemalung von Porzellanwaren anderer Manufakturen. Ab 1867 stellte er jedoch seine eigene Keramik her. Ähnlich wie Zsolnay spezialisierte sich auch Fischer auf die Herstellung ornamentreich verzierter Keramik. Den größten Erfolg hatte er mit seinen „Majolika“-Erzeugnissen, die in Österreich-Ungarn sowie im Export verkauft wurden. Fischer stellte auch mit chinesischen Motiven verzierte Werke her, die 1885 auf der ungarischen Ausstellung verkauft wurden. Es gelang ihm, zahlreiche bedeutende Auszeichnungen zu gewinnen. Schließlich übernahm sein Sohn Emil den Betrieb. Unter der Leitung von Emil Fischer begann die Manufaktur jedoch 1885 allmählich an Boden zu verlieren und ging schließlich in den Besitz der Zsolnay-Manufaktur in Pécs im Südwesten Ungarns über. Einige behaupteten, Zsolnay habe die Fischers aufgekauft, um sie zu seinem eigenen Vorteil aus dem Geschäft zu drängen.
Es gab keinen anderen Ort, nicht einmal in Ungarn, an dem so viele Objekte der ungarischen Porzellanmanufaktur Fischer an einem Ort zu sehen waren. Es handelt sich um Objekte, die alle Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts hergestellt wurden; jedes einzelne war also über 100 Jahre alt, da die Manufaktur etwa zur Jahrhundertwende ihren Betrieb einstellte. Im Gegensatz zu anderen bekannten ungarischen Porzellanmanufakturen wie Heren und Zsolnay, die auch heute noch produzieren, stellt Fischer keine Objekte mehr her – und wahrscheinlich gerade deshalb werden Fischer-Objekte erst jetzt zu begehrten Sammlerstücken. Sie tauchen bei Auktionen von Gutshöfen und im Internet auf, und einige Stücke, insbesondere im Jugendstil, erzielen bereits hohe Summen in Höhe von mehreren Tausend.

I thought this was an excellent 120 pages book on a complex subject. It discusses a variety of subjects besides the title of plate tectonics and which are related to it: continental drift, oceanic seafloor spreading, fracture zones, subduction of tectonic plate edges, faulting, the creation of mountains and plateaus, earthquakes, volcanism, oceanic magnetic anomalies, and the locations of concentrated metallic ores. The text is accompanied by almost 40 sketches and diagrams elaborating on the discussions provided in the text. The book also introduces the grand concepts of Earth geology such as the mantle, lithosphere, and asthenosphere. It also provides a short history of the development of the concept of plate tectonics. Finally, the book provides specific detailed descriptions of the formation of major mountain ranges and plateaus such as the Himalayas, the Tibetan Plateau, Tien Shan, the Tarim Basin, the movement of Eastern Asia, the Andes, and the western US mountain ranges. It also gives a short description of the movement of India from the eastern edge of the African Plate to the Eurasian Plate over the past 90+ million years.

Books like this have to be leavened with a human dimension ...

This book is too technical for people who are new to the subject of plate tectonics. In fact, I think it is fair to say that if you can understand this book you don't need to read it but if you need to read it you won't understand it. Books like this have to be leavened with a human dimension in the form of stories about people. This book has such stories but they are very brief and tend to get burried under the tecnical detail. There are other books in the "A Very Short Introduction" series which give far more accessible introductions to plate tectonic (e.g. "Earth Science: A Very Short Introduction"). I would suggest that anyone who was entirely new to the subject should read one of them instead.
