Chikudō stammte aus Nagoya, das in der Edo-Zeit (1603-1867) nicht gerade als wichtiges Kunstzentrum Japans bezeichnet werden konnte. Er war der Sohn eines Artzes und hatte aber zusammen mit seinem auch berühmt gerwordenen Kollegen Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856) das Glück, Zugang zu einer bedeutenden Sammlung chinesischer Kunst eines reichen Händlers zu haben. Dort bildeten sich beide Maler mit Kopien chinesischer Kunst der Ming-Zeit (1368-1644) und der Ching-Zeit (1644-1912).

1803 zog er dann aber mit seinem Kollegen Baiitsu 1803 in die Kulturhaupstadt Kyoto, wo er seine Ausbildung und Kenntnis chinesischer Kunst ausnützte und zum Gründer der sog. nanga-Schule wurde, einer Stilrichtung, japanischer Malerei mit chinesischen Motiven, die weit ins 19. Jh. von eminenter Bedeutung war und die Stillandschaft der japanischen Malerei wesentlich bereicherte.

Diese Darstellung des Fuji-san ist allerdings ein vollkommen japanisches Thema; eine chinesische Note könnte man höchstens an dem Festhalten der Zentralachse erkennen, denn die Chinesen liebten ja seit alters die Symmetrie in ihren Kunstformen. Selbst die Unterschrift und die Angabe, dass Chikudō das Bild als 71-jähriger gemalt hat, ist zentral platziert. Chikudō wählte einen Künstlernamen, der (mit dem 2. Zeichen) auch recht chinesisch anmutet: Chūtan 沖澹. Doch die  Bedeutung des Namens  - “ruhiges Meer“ - passt zur erhabenen Stille des umwölkten Götterbergs wunderbar.

Die Montierung des Rollbilds  ist vermutlich neueren Datums; das Blau der Umfassung (chūmawashi) ist eine glänzende himmelblaue Seide, die die Eleganz der Malerei unterstreicht.

Not for someone that needs step by step instructions and pre-drilled holes
Nice cart that looks good once assembled. But be warned: there are NO predrilled holes for any of the screws. You will need to build each section of the frame that attaches to each wood panel FIRST, sit it on the wood and use a electric drill or driver to put the screws into the wood. Same goes for the wheel attachments - no holes drilled for these either. So if you are someone that can't even build a piece of IKEA furniture - this is NOT for you as this will require more skill and power tools.

It is very heavy so help may be needed. It took 4 hours to put together, there were no predrilled holes and some of the metal poles need to be adjusted slightly to fit correctly.
