Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) war ein vielseitiges Design-Genie und wird als Leitfigur der modernen finnischen Handwerkskunst angesehen. Sein Beitrag zum Design umfasst alles von Glas, Möbeln, Skulpturen, Stadtplanung, Kunst, bis zur Gestaltung von Banknoten und Grafiken. Im Lauf seiner Karriere hat Wirkkala zu vielen internationalen Ausstellungen beigetragen während er selber trotz des Ruhms ein Einsiedler in der Natur blieb. 
Das Ultima Thule Design ist inspiriert von einer eisbedeckten finnischen Insel, die Wirkkala versuchte in Glas nach zu bilden.
