Diogenes Laertius' Lebensbeschreibungen antiker Philosophen von den Vorsokratikern bis in die Zeit des Hellenismus sind das umfassendste aus der Antike erhaltene philosophiegeschichtliche Werk des griechisch-römischen Altertums; es stammt - wahrscheinlich - aus der ersten Hälfte des dritten nachchristlichen Jahrhunderts, der Zeit der Blüte der römischen Jurisprudenz und der griechischen philosophischen Aristoteles-Kommentierung. Die Viten der insgesamt 82 Autoren, die Diogenes vorstellt, enthalten Informationen über Herkunft, Leben, Persönlichkeit, überlieferte Werke, Briefe, Testament und Todesumstände und werden ergänzt durch Anekdoten und Zitate. Sie bieten einen guten Überblick nicht nur über die einzelnen philosophischen Schulen, sondern auch über die Zusammenhänge, die zwischen ihnen bestanden. Diogenes kann als »Kronzeuge« der antiken Philosophie gelten, stellt er doch zahlreiche Autoren vor, von denen keine eigenen Texte erhalten sind, und beschreibt deren Wirkung auf die Entwicklung des antiken Denkens. In literarischer, oft anekdotenhafter Form und durchaus mit Sinn für die komischen Seiten der altgriechischen Denker bietet Diogenes eine Mischung aus zuverlässiger Sachinformation, Stilisierung und reiner Fiktion. Sein Werk ist bis heute ein unentbehrliches Quellenbuch antiker Philosophiegeschichte. Als klassische Übersetzung des im 9. Jahrhundert in Byzanz wiederentdeckten Werks ins Deutsche gilt bis heute die des renommierten Platon-Übersetzers Otto Apelt; sie liegt hier, eingeleitet und kommentiert von Klaus Reich unter Mitarbeit von Hans Günter Zekl, in der Philosophischen Bibliothek neu vor. Das umfangreiche Register wurde von Martin Eberhardt für diese Ausgabe neu erstellt.

So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
