Kein anderer Fotoband eines DDR-Fotografen hat zuvor oder danach eine vergleichbare Resonanz gefunden. 'Es gibt kaum ein schöneres, kein wahreres Buch über die untergegangene DDR. Melis verbindet die registrierende Strenge eines August Sander mit der graziösen artistischen Aufmerksamkeit eines Cartier-Bresson für die Sensationen des Alltags', urteilte Peter von Becker im "Tagesspiegel". Die atmosphärisch dichten, oft symbolhaften Bilder beleuchten nüchtern und kritisch den Alltag, die Arbeits- und Lebensbedingungen und die politischen Rituale im realen Sozialismus.
