Mit "Bleeds" präsentiert die Rockband aus North Carolina eine mitreißende Sammlung ihres erzählerisch dichten Southern-Rock, der - wie die fesselndsten Momente in ihrer Diskografie - den Link zwischen Neugier und Bekenntnis einfühlsam erforscht. "Bleeds" ist ein Patchwork-artiger Triumph aus literarischen Anspielungen und Outlaw-Grit, aus ortsbezogener Poesie und haarsträubendem Lärm. Karly Hartzman - Gründerin, Frontfrau und Haupttexterin der Band - führt WEDNESDAYs gefestigte Identität auf die gemeinsame Zeit bei der Arbeit an früheren Alben sowie einen ebenso bereichernden wie unermüdlichen Tourplan zurück. "Bleeds ist der spirituelle Nachfolger von Rat Saw God und meiner Meinung nach das typische ,Wednesday Creek Rock'-Album", sagt Hartzman und zeigt sich zufrieden mit der Art und Weise, wie ihre Band ihren charakteristischen Trademarksound verfeinert und präzisiert hat, die sie zu einer der interessantesten Rockbands ihrer Generation macht. "So sollten Wednesday-Songs klingen", erklärt sie. "Wir haben einen Großteil unseres Lebens damit verbracht, das herauszufinden - und ich habe das Gefühl, dass wir es hier geschafft haben." Genau wie "Rat Saw God", eine der wichtigsten Rock-Platten der 2020er Jahre, entstand "Bleeds" bei Drop of Sun in Asheville und wurde von Alex Farrar produziert, der die Band seit "Twin Plagues" aufnimmt. Hartzman brachte erneut Demos ins Studio, wo sie mit ihren Bandkollegen - Xandy Chelmis (Lap Steel, Pedal Steel), Alan Miller (Schlagzeug), Ethan Baechtold (Bass, Klavier) und Jake "MJ" Lenderman (Gitarre) - als Team die Kompositionen mit der genau richtigen Menge an Country-Wahrheiten, Indie-Pop-Hooks und Sludge-Lärm versahen. Mehr als je zuvor wurden die präzisen Proportionen durch die Lyrik gesteuert - nicht nur der Ton oder die Thematik, sondern auch der tatsächliche Klang der Worte sowie Hartzmans meisterhaft subjektiver Ansatz bei der Auswahl der Details.

Wonderful book for many reasons

I recommend this book for its story, cultural accuracy, and high interest action. First it is an exciting story of how conflicts arise and can be resolved with an exciting lacrosse game at the end. How cool is that? But the cultural and historical details make this a fascinating read for all ages. If you want to know about the lives of Native Americans in the New York area, written by a Native American, and put into an historically accurate story, this is a great read. I would recommend this as a high interest type of reader for middle school readers, one that would challenge them as well. The story could be about conflicts today, but the action is naturally more intense. If you are looking for an accurate portrait of Native American life, Bruchac is a wonderful author for you to choose. It is hard to find good books about northeastern Native Americans.

This is a great book. There's a massive shortage of children's books written by Natives, especially ones that give a picture of pre-European America, and if you've noticed that, THIS IS THE BOOK YOU'RE LOOKING FOR to fill that hole in your home school curriculum/child's library. It's a "boy book," but my seven year old girl got through it without any complaints except that she wanted me to read ahead so I could tell her if anything scary happened. I would say that the plot is a little slow, the main story pauses a lot for background information or traditional stories. But that's not really a complaint, I don't think it's even worth taking off one star. Almost anything by Joseph Bruchac is worth your money, and this one is no exception.
