COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the course "Assist Older People with Oral Hygiene," where we focus on empowering practitioners with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote optimal oral health among older adults. Throughout this course, we'll delve into the unique challenges and considerations associated with oral hygiene in aged care settings.

We'll begin by providing an overview of the oral health challenges commonly faced by older adults and highlighting the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene for overall health and well-being. Understanding the impact of poor oral health on quality of life and its connection to systemic health conditions is crucial for effective care.

You'll learn about the vital role that support workers play in supporting older adults' oral health needs and how good oral hygiene practices contribute significantly to the overall health and well-being of older individuals. We'll also delve into specific oral health issues such as periodontal disease, tooth decay, cavities, and dry mouth (xerostomia), along with their effects on older adults' oral health and quality of life.

Understanding the anatomy and physiology of the oral cavity, including the structure and function of teeth, salivary glands, saliva production, and oral mucosa, will provide a solid foundation for effective oral health maintenance and care.

You'll gain insights into conducting comprehensive oral health assessments, developing individualised care plans for oral hygiene, and identifying specific oral health needs and goals for older adults. We'll also explore proper brushing techniques for older adults, assistance with flossing and interdental cleaning, and the use of adaptive oral hygiene aids to promote effective oral hygiene practices.

Additionally, you'll learn about denture care and maintenance, including cleaning, storing, assessing fit and comfort, and using denture adhesives and solutions. We'll also cover the selection and use of oral health products and equipment, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, denture cleaners, oral care swabs, and moisturisers.

Strategies for preventing tooth decay, gum disease, oral infections, and addressing oral pain and discomfort among older adults will be discussed in detail. You'll also explore the significance of balanced nutrition, hydration, and nutritional considerations for older adults with oral health issues to promote overall oral health.

Effective communication techniques, building trust and rapport with older adults, and addressing anxiety and fear related to dental care will be emphasised throughout the course. Lastly, understanding the importance of regular dental check-ups, referring older adults to dentists for specialised care, and collaborating with dental professionals for coordinated care will be covered.

Overall, this course aims to equip support workers with the necessary tools and knowledge to provide compassionate and effective oral health care to older adults, promoting their overall health and well-being.

Not very durable
Size: 5 Pack
They’re a great toy for the dog. However, if the dog is bigger, they are very easily destroyed.

Hold up to a heeler!
Size: 5 Pack
I have a red heeler who destroys chew toys in quickly. I was extremely happy with these ones. They are made of thicker material and even after he chews the squeaky piece out, I can play tug of war with them without them ripping apart. The price for the quality is the best I have found in a long time.

Great toy that stands up to tough dogs
Size: 5 Pack
When these toys first arrived and I opened the box I was disappointed. They seemed a bit flimsy and were not what I was expecting Boy was I wrong! My dog lived his new toy and it’s has not left his side. Best of all, it’s a tough little toy that can take a beating and keep going. My dog usually tears through his toys in a matter of hours, and I tried numerous toys over the years. I’ve tried Kevlar toys, toy that claim to be very sturdy, he always destroyed them in a matter of hours. This toy looks flimsy, but it’s soft and strong

Dog toy that lasts.
Size: 5 Pack
I've got a heavy chewer on my hands, so I've basically thrown money away on countless "durable" toys that get shredded in minutes. I was skeptical about these, but the "no stuffing" design caught my eye—at least there wouldn't be fluff all over my living room! I'm happy to report that these have actually lasted! My dog loves shaking them around and making them squeak. The crinkle sound is a huge bonus; it really keeps him engaged. The fact that they're lightweight makes them perfect for a game of fetch, and my dog can easily carry them around. For the price, getting a whole bundle of these is a great deal. If you're tired of cleaning up toy stuffing, I'd definitely recommend giving these a try.
