Technics SL-1210G Grand Class Direct Drive Turntable at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The Technics SL-1210G is a Grand Class reference direct drive turntable from Technics (Osaka, Japan), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Built around a newly developed coreless direct drive motor with twin-rotor construction, a three-layer heavyweight platter individually balanced at the factory, a high-sensitivity magnesium gimbal tonearm, and a four-layer cabinet, the SL-1210G brings the engineering legacy of the professional SP-10 lineage to a complete, fully integrated turntable system. For vinyl listeners who want the precision and build quality of the Grand Class platform with the classic black aesthetic of the SL-1210 tradition, the SL-1210G is the definitive choice.

Coreless Direct Drive Motor with Twin-Rotor Construction

Conventional direct drive turntables suffer from two fundamental problems: cogging, the magnetic locking effect caused by an iron core in the motor, and minute rotational vibrations that degrade the signal retrieved by the stylus. The SL-1210G eliminates both. Its newly developed coreless direct drive motor removes the iron core entirely, eliminating cogging and producing smooth, uninterrupted rotation. The twin-rotor construction maintains high starting torque while simultaneously reducing the load on the bearing and suppressing the fine vibrations that iron-core motors inherently generate. Motor control technology derived from Technics' Blu-ray device engineering switches drive mode according to the operational status of the motor, achieving both high starting torque and high rotational speed stability from the same drive system.

Three-Layer Platter with Factory Balance Adjustment

The SL-1210G's platter combines a rigidly bonded brass and aluminium die-cast construction with deadening rubber covering the entire rear surface, forming a three-layer assembly with rotational inertial mass that exceeds the SP-10MK2 — the direct drive standard of professional broadcast stations worldwide — and more than doubles the inertial mass of the SL-1200MK5. Every platter is individually balanced after assembly using Technics' specialised high-precision factory balance adjustment equipment. Units that have completed this process carry a BALANCED sticker as confirmation. Uneven weight distribution in a rotating platter causes excess vibration and noise; the factory balancing process eliminates this as a variable entirely.

Key Features

  • Coreless Direct Drive Motor: No iron core means zero cogging and inherently smoother rotation than conventional direct drive designs
  • Twin-Rotor Construction: Maintains high torque while reducing bearing load and suppressing minute rotational vibrations simultaneously
  • Blu-ray-Derived Motor Control Technology: Adaptive drive mode switching achieves both high starting torque and sustained rotational speed stability
  • Three-Layer Heavyweight Platter: Brass and aluminium die-cast with full-surface deadening rubber; inertial mass exceeds the SP-10MK2 and more than doubles the SL-1200MK5
  • Individual Factory Balance Adjustment: Every unit balanced on precision equipment after assembly; BALANCED sticker confirms the process has been completed
  • High-Sensitivity Magnesium Gimbal Tonearm: Cold-drawn lightweight magnesium arm tube; gimbal suspension with horizontal and vertical rotation axes intersecting at a single central point; high-precision cut-processed bearing housing for exceptional initial motion sensitivity
  • Four-Layer Cabinet Construction: Aluminium die-cast, BMC, heavyweight rubber, and 10 mm hairline-finished aluminium top panel; combines maximum structural rigidity with a premium surface quality
  • Gold-Plated Brass-Milled Phono and Ground Terminals: Prevents signal degradation at the output stage; easy cable attachment and removal; internal metal shielding reduces susceptibility to external noise
  • Classic SL-1210 Black Finish: The traditional black aesthetic of the professional SL-1210 lineage, updated with Grand Class engineering and materials

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Technics SL-1210G?

The Technics SL-1210G is a Grand Class reference direct drive turntable featuring a coreless twin-rotor direct drive motor, a three-layer heavyweight platter with factory balance adjustment, a high-sensitivity cold-drawn magnesium gimbal tonearm, and a four-layer cabinet construction. It is the black-finish variant of the SL-1200G Grand Class platform, sharing all engineering with the SL-1200G.

What is the difference between the Technics SL-1210G and the SL-1200G?

The SL-1210G and SL-1200G are technically identical, sharing the same coreless motor, platter, tonearm, cabinet, and power supply. The only difference is the finish: the SL-1210G is black, continuing the traditional SL-1210 colour associated with professional DJ and broadcast use, while the SL-1200G is silver.

What is the difference between the Technics SL-1210G and the SL-1210GR2?

The SL-1210G is the Grand Class flagship model with a coreless twin-rotor motor, three-layer platter, four-layer cabinet, individual factory balance adjustment, and cold-drawn magnesium tonearm. The SL-1210GR2 is the more accessible Grand Class model with a refined but less elaborate construction. The SL-1210G represents the higher level of engineering and materials within the Grand Class range.

What does the coreless motor in the SL-1210G mean for sound quality?

A coreless motor has no iron core in its rotor, which eliminates cogging — the magnetic reluctance effect that causes subtle speed irregularities in iron-core motors. Combined with the twin-rotor construction that reduces bearing load and suppresses minute vibrations, the coreless motor retrieves more of the fine detail and timing accuracy embedded in analogue records than a conventional direct drive motor can achieve.

Why is the platter individually balanced at the factory?

Even small weight distribution irregularities in a rotating platter generate vibrations and noise that degrade the signal read by the stylus. Technics balances every SL-1210G platter individually on precision equipment after assembly and confirms the process with a BALANCED sticker on each unit. This eliminates platter-induced vibration as a variable and ensures consistent performance from every turntable.

Does the Technics SL-1210G include a cartridge?

No. The SL-1210G includes a headshell but no cartridge. Contact Vinyl Sound Toronto for cartridge recommendations matched to your phono stage, musical preferences, and budget.

Where can I buy the Technics SL-1210G in Toronto or Canada?

The Technics SL-1210G is available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada, an authorised Technics dealer. Contact us to arrange an audition or to discuss cartridge and phono stage pairing for a complete analogue system.

Too Short & Skewed Foot. Easy Build & Good Material.
Color: Black, Size: Upgraded Base-1 Panel, Color: Black, Size: Upgraded Base-1 Panel
The 3 partitions I purchased were of good material but were shorter than described and the "feet" on one end of all 3 partitions was skewed a few degrees so I cannot butt them together side by side. PHOTO #1: you see me who is 63.5 inches in my shoes standing next to the 72 inch described partition minus the wheels so it is fair to say it should be 70 inches. But even so, 70 inches minus 63.5 equals 6.5 inches that should be above my head and should not include the tip of the pole and a 6 inch gap below. PHOTO #2: shows the gap when a 90 degree good end is butted against the skewed end. Good material and easy construction but just make it taller and fix the jig that skews the bottom bracket weld.

Great for “pop up home office”
Color: Grey, Size: Upgraded Base-4 Panel
If you need a space for a video conference in a hurry or to make a private corner for a kiddo to nap in this is a perfect divider that blocks light and separates spaces. It was easy to put together and collapses down to a flat panel for easy storage out of the way.

It’s a hard no from me
Color: Black, Size: Upgraded Base-1 Panel
I ordered two of these black, single screen panels several months ago. I ordered an additional four I needed a few days ago so I would have the total of 6 that I ended up needing. I did so by clicking on my past order (2 screens) item page and simply placed my recent order for 4 more. Two of the six screens have bolts that don’t fully screw down, such that one of each panel’s four points where the screen attaches to the two legs isn’t fully screwed down and flush. As a result, the screen doesn’t stay entirely vertical -It’s warped askew. Also, 3 of the six screens are different heights than the other 3. It’s clear to me that this company has ZERO QUALITY CONTROL, as there’s not anything that is even adjustable on these screens that leaves room for user error. Additionally, there are four black rubber circles that come in the “parts/screws” bag that don’t have corresponding installation instructions in the instruction manual. Just spend a little more and go with a better quality product somewhere else.

Good Product
Size: 3 Panel-102'', Color: Beige
I got these dividers for outdoor use for some privacy from neighbors. They arrived quickly and were easy to set up. They look good, and though the legs don’t offer stability against any amount of wind—which I expected as it wasn’t advertised for outdoor use—all it took was placing a cinder block on the feet to hold it up right. Coverage is good, it’s easy to fold and move as needed, and it’s light weight. All in all a decent product. I will caution the purchase of “used like-new,” as both of the dividers I ordered were previously returned items, and one came missing a cap, instructions were not included, and the poles were all mixed up and not properly labeled. If I had not ordered a second divider (which did include the instructions) I would have had a much harder time figuring out which pieces were which and how to put them together.
