From personal interviews to the comedy of Chris Rock, from commercial advertisements to the art of Kara Walker, and from cookbooks to literature, Williams-Forson considers how black women defy conventional representations of blackness in relationship to these foods and exercise influence through food preparation and distribution.Chicken--both the bird and the food--has played multiple roles in the lives of African American women from the slavery era to the present. It has provided food and a source of income for their families, shaped a distinctive culture, and helped women define and exert themselves in racist and hostile environments. Psyche A. Williams-Forson examines the complexity of black women's legacies using food as a form of cultural work. While acknowledging the negative interpretations of black culture associated with chicken imagery, Williams-Forson focuses her analysis on the ways black women have forged their own self-definitions and relationships to the "gospel bird."
Exploring material ranging from personal interviews to the comedy of Chris Rock, from commercial advertisements to the art of Kara Walker, and from cookbooks to literature, Williams-Forson considers how black women arrive at degrees of self-definition and self-reliance using certain foods. She demonstrates how they defy conventional representations of blackness and exercise influence through food preparation and distribution. Understanding these complex relationships clarifies how present associations of blacks and chicken are rooted in a past that is fraught with both racism and agency. The traditions and practices of feminism, Williams-Forson argues, are inherent in the foods women prepare and serve.

Perfect for beside any sink even dorms

I bought this for my son for his dorm room for his sponge for washing dishes and for him to put his dish soap and his hand soap for everything that he could keep it all tidy because he’s actually quite organized and he actually really liked it and it looked very neat. It’s easy to clean. It wasn’t too big everything fit perfectly for the Myers hand soap, and dish soap. The color is neutral almost masculine is gray and black. And there is no issue of it falling because he kept it on a side table away from the sink so that nobody else would use it so it would be just his.
So It was altogether and kept everything organized. He really liked it.

Great Holder for the kitchen sink

Small caddy that makes a big difference

I don't have counter space to spare, so having a dedicated spot for my sponges, dish brush, and soap right at the sink has been really convenient. Everything is corralled and easy to grab.
The angled design drains directly into the sink, which keeps things from getting gross and waterlogged. There's a separated sponge compartment which I like, and it's big enough to hold a couple of sponges, a long dish brush, and a small bottle of dish soap all at once.
It also just looks way nicer than my previous solution of stuffing everything into a jar. It's sturdy, hasn't gotten rusty or tarnished, and it just feels well made. Sometimes a small organizational upgrade makes your whole kitchen feel better and this is one of those. Also, very reasonably priced! For $11, this is a goodie.
