Formation & Characteristics
Smoky quartz crystallizes in igneous and hydrothermal environments as crystals form from a shared nucleus, producing a clustered habit. The color arises from natural radiation in surrounding rock activating color centers around aluminum impurities within the quartz lattice. The present specimen displays a range of tones from pale, almost translucent smoky to deeper brown, with transparent to dark facets and occasional inclusions. The outer surfaces preserve natural cavities and minor irregularities typical of a hand-formed mineral specimen.
