Released in 1998, the Sony MZ-E55 was smaller and 35 grams lighter than its predecessor, the MZ-E35, which was released the previous year.
It is dedicated to disc playback, and does not have disc recording functionality.
It features a diecast magnesium case and 40 second anti-shock memory.
Due to its age it does not support MDLP.
It weighs 80 grams without a battery or disc installed.
It has a 3.5 mm headphone jack for audio output.
