I have a companion in life I would like to part ways with. His name is pride. Unbeknownst to me, everywhere I go, he follows close behind. I’m not the only one with such a companion.

I believe it is why Adam and Eve ate from the tree—the tree of knowledge—the very place God had forbidden them, yet they feasted upon it anyway. Why? Why would they not listen to the instructions of the One who made them in His image?

Pride.

What they thought of more than God was themselves. They had the wrong desire — to become something greater than what God had intended when He created them with love by His own hands. God’s rejection of the fruit was His protection for them from the fall. Yet, they fell and fell hard.

Sadly, Adam and Eve were not spiritually satisfied with being who and what God made them, so they reached, thinking they would become like God. Is this so different from many of our lives today? We all want to become something greater than what we see in the mirror. We aren’t satisfied with our faces, our financial status, nor our family life— so we reach into places never intended for us.

God is God.

But this is the scenario—and the entire reason—for Christmas. His Son, Jesus, took on flesh. He became fully God and fully man so that we could place our pride—our sin—upon Him. We are not God’s people created to know all things. We are God’s people created to believe all things written in His Word walking in obedience on the path He lays out before us. Just like Adam and Eve—It is for our good and His glory. While many things of God are secret things and belong only to Him - JESUS is no secret. He is God’s Christmas gift to the world. God tells us in Deuteronomy 29:29:

“The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.”
