Exploring the Historical Context of The Nitrate Ship
The Rise of Nitrate Trade in the 19th Century
The 19th century marked a significant period for the nitrate trade, particularly in South America. Countries like Chile became major exporters of sodium nitrate, which was essential for fertilizers and explosives. This booming industry transformed coastal towns into bustling ports, where ships like the one depicted in Somerscales' painting played a crucial role. The Nitrate Ship captures this vibrant era, showcasing the economic and cultural shifts that accompanied the rise of nitrate as a global commodity.Impact of Maritime Industry on Global Trade
The maritime industry was the backbone of global trade during this time. Ships transported goods across oceans, connecting continents and cultures. The Nitrate Ship symbolizes this interconnectedness, illustrating how maritime commerce facilitated the exchange of not just products, but also ideas and innovations. The painting serves as a reminder of the vital role that shipping played in shaping modern economies and societies.Thomas Somerscales: Life and Artistic Journey
Thomas Somerscales was a prominent British marine painter known for his detailed and dynamic depictions of ships at sea. Born in 1842, he developed a passion for the ocean early in life. His travels along the coasts of Europe and South America inspired his work. Somerscales' dedication to capturing the essence of maritime life is evident in The Nitrate Ship, where he combines technical skill with a deep appreciation for the sea.Visual Analysis of The Nitrate Ship
Color Palette: The Use of Blues and Earthy Tones
The color palette of The Nitrate Ship is striking, dominated by rich blues and earthy browns. These colors evoke the vastness of the ocean and the solidity of the ship. The deep azure of the water contrasts beautifully with the warm hues of the ship's hull, creating a sense of harmony. This thoughtful use of color enhances the painting's emotional impact, drawing viewers into the maritime scene.Composition: Balancing Elements of Sea and Ship
Somerscales expertly balances the elements of sea and ship in his composition. The ship, with its billowing sails, commands attention while the rolling waves provide a dynamic backdrop. This balance creates a sense of movement, as if the ship is navigating through the waves. The horizon line is strategically placed, allowing the viewer to appreciate both the vessel and the expansive sea.Brushwork Techniques: Capturing Movement and Texture
The brushwork in The Nitrate Ship is both meticulous and expressive. Somerscales employs a variety of techniques to capture the movement of the water and the texture of the ship's sails. His use of short, quick strokes conveys the energy of the sea, while longer, smoother strokes depict the ship's structure. This combination brings the painting to life, immersing viewers in the maritime experience.Thematic Elements in The Nitrate Ship
Symbolism of the Ship: A Representation of Progress
The ship in The Nitrate Ship symbolizes progress and innovation. It represents the advancements in maritime technology that allowed for more efficient trade routes and transportation of goods. This vessel is not just a means of transport; it embodies the spirit of exploration and the pursuit of economic growth during the 19th century.Nature vs. Industry: The Dichotomy of Sea and Commerce
The painting also explores the tension between nature and industry. The vast, untamed sea contrasts with the man-made ship, highlighting the relationship between humanity and the natural world. This dichotomy invites viewers to reflect on the impact of industrialization on the environment and the delicate balance that must be maintained.Human Element: Sailors and Their Connection to the Sea
Sailors play a crucial role in The Nitrate Ship, representing the human connection to the maritime world. Their presence emphasizes the labor and skill required to navigate the seas. Somerscales captures their dedication and resilience, reminding us of the individuals who braved the ocean's challenges to facilitate trade and exploration.Comparative Analysis with Other Maritime Paintings
Contrasting Styles: Somerscales vs. Turner
When comparing Somerscales to J.M.W. Turner, we see distinct differences in style. Turner often focused on the sublime aspects of nature, using light and color to evoke emotion. In contrast, Somerscales emphasizes the details of maritime life, showcasing the ship's structure and the realities of sea travel. Both artists, however, share a deep appreciation for the ocean's beauty.Influence of Impressionism on Maritime Art
The influence of Impressionism is evident in Somerscales' work. While he maintains a realistic approach, his brushwork and color choices reflect the movement's emphasis on capturing light and atmosphere. This blend of realism and impressionistic techniques allows The Nitrate Ship to resonate with viewers on multiple levels.Legacy of Maritime Paintings in the 19th Century
Maritime paintings like The Nitrate Ship played a significant role in the 19th century art scene. They celebrated the age of exploration and the importance of the sea in commerce. These artworks not only documented historical events but also inspired future generations of artists to explore maritime themes in their own work.Artistic Techniques and Innovations in The Nitrate Ship
Use of Light and Shadow: Creating Depth and Realism
Somerscales masterfully uses light and shadow to create depth in The Nitrate Ship. The interplay of sunlight on the water and the ship's sails adds a three-dimensional quality to the painting. This technique enhances the realism, making viewers feel as if they are witnessing the scene firsthand.Innovative Materials: The Evolution of Oil Paints
During Somerscales' time, oil paints were evolving, allowing for richer colors and more durable finishes. He took advantage of these innovations to create vibrant, lasting works. The Nitrate Ship showcases the potential of oil painting, with its vivid hues and intricate details that stand the test of time.Framing the Scene: Perspective and Horizon Line
The perspective in The Nitrate Ship is carefully constructed. Somerscales places the horizon line at eye level, inviting viewers to engage with the scene. So good!
Format: Kindle
Wings of Stars was a fantastic first book to a new series. It grabbed me in its clutches within the first chapter and kept ahold of me.
This new world of M Sinclair and RL Caulder’s is all about angels and mythical creatures. It’s full of drama from all points. From Kieran’s awful home life to keeping the stars alive and everything in between.
Kieran is our FMC and despite everything she keeps her spirit and defiance.
Keeping to their norm, there is a group of guys for our FMC but they definitely aren’t established yet, and not fully cemented yet into being a group rather than her choosing between them.
Ronan is so sweet and gives off Daddy vibes
Gabe is also sweet and wants the best of everything for Kieran and will defend her against anyone
Bastian is slightly unhinged but I loved him immediately
Steele is a jerk… just as you find redeeming qualities, he screws up again… but yet I still want him to redeem himself.
There’s another one… but if I gave his name I would be spoiling a plot twist so you will just have to find out yourself… but you’ll love him as much as I do.
This is a slow burn but the little bit of spice we do get is hot, especially with the dirty talk.

Angels and the Fallen — Breathtaking Start
Format: Kindle
This book was EVERYTHING I expected it to be and more. Leave to R.L. Caulder and M. Sinclair to give us yet another amazing book!
Kieran and her guys hooked me from the very beginning and did not let go. Found family is one of my favorite tropes and it was done so well in this book. Couple that along with an FMC trying to find her place in the world and I was practically drooling over this book. The world building, the conflict, the wyverin sidekick — it all was done so well that it felt fresh and real.
Each love interest felt real and unique in their own ways. I felt connected to each one and like they were truly different people. I love that so much in a book and these two authors never miss with their love interests.
Multi POV, Reverse harem, who did this to you, and a magical world highlighting the angels and the fallen. This book has everything and it does it so well.
Big thank you to R.L. Caulder and M. Sinclair for the arc copy! I cannot wait for book 2!

A new take 🤔
Format: Kindle
I’m not going to go into what this book is about — by now you e already read the synopsis and have an idea — but I will give a couple of insights.
Definitely a different take on angels and their fall; I like it. This is an interesting start to a new series - YES, this does end on a cliffhanger so be prepared for that. I’m eager for the next book (and hopefully the last in this series — sometimes the author(s) will switch it up depending on how the story flows for them) in this series.
I’m hoping that a certain male character redeems himself because he’s a dick that will make the meaning of mixed signals jealous lol.
You ever watch that old movie — I think it’s call Mommy Dearest? — yea, let’s switch that up to daddy. That man would make a perfect husband to mommy dearest.
I recommend this book because while these authors are well known for their cliffhangers, they are also well known for putting out good stories.

Liked it
Format: Kindle
I liked the worlds and the characters. The prophesy is confusing in that I would think, since all worlds ore on a path to destruction, the angels would want their world to be saved. I am sure there is more evil that will be revealed as the series proceeds. I dislike a prolonged “poor little me” trope and the main character has moved past that, thankfully, and began to show a fierce attitude as the novel progressed. The last portion of the novel had some great action. It’s worth reading, just be patient with a slow start.

Unexpectedly emotional and packed with action!
Format: Kindle
Why do I suddenly want nothing more than a tiny wyvern to snuggle with?! It’s adorable and I absolutely love all of those moments! Wings of Stars was everything I’ve come expect from this powerful author duo. The fact that it’s written by two different people is completely transparent to the reader and they’ve brought us another world and characters that we’re all emotionally connected to and fully invested in! The injustice that we see from Alfemir in the many forms in which it comes is infuriating and makes me desperate for the conclusion of the story so they can all get what’s coming to them! I love all the guys right now, with one exception, and if you’re read it, you know exactly who I’m talking about. Bastian is hilarious - he was the comedic relief through an otherwise quite serious story. My heart bleeds for him and I can’t wait to see how he progresses through the series. Parts of Wings of Stars were unexpectedly emotional and of course I was left with my jaw on the floor at that cliffhanger! Next, please!
