The AK receiver is made from stamped steel, and is riveted for added durability. Internally the rifle features a reinforced 8mm TM compatible version 3 gearbox with a quick change locking spring guide; this ensures compatibility with the great majority of aftermarket parts as well as allowing easy spring changes without disassembly of the gearbox itself. The rifles come from the factory with neodymium magnet motors and a pre-installed MOSFET for improved performance and longevity out of the box.

In 1973, a design competition (codenamed "Modern") was started for the adoption of a fully automatic carbine. The GRAU decided to adopt Kalashnikov's model, the AKS-74U, which was largely a shortened AKS-74, because its performance was no worse than the competition, and promised significant production cost savings by utilizing existing equipment for the AK-74 line. A final round of large-scale testing with Kalashnikov's model was performed by airborne divisions in the Transcaucasian Military District in March 1977. The AKS-74U ("U" for Ukorochenniy, or "shortened") was officially adopted in 1979, and given the official, but seldom used GRAU designation 6P26. Production stopped in 1993. The AKS-74U bridges the tactical deployment gap between a submachine gun and an assault rifle. It was intended for use mainly with special forces, airborne infantry, rear-eschelon units, helicopter and armored vehicle crews. It has been augmented and replaced by various submachine guns, and the less compact AK-105 carbine in Russian military service. It is commonly used by law enforcement; for example, each urban police foot patrol is issued at least one.

For the price point, this AK is mostly made of steel, with the exception of the laminated wooden furniture like the handguard, buttstock, and faux Bakelite grip. It is built solidly and can take a beating similar to the actual AK rifles. The CYMA Platinum Series AKS-74U AEG is a folding stock, compact modernized variant of the AK-74, which is still in limited service in the Russian Armed Forces. It was developed during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan for Soviet troops. This CYMA AKS-74U is a faithful replica of the Soviet service rifle, featuring the exact same external design of the standard issue rifle of that time. The gun comes with a 150-round mid-capacity AEG magazine as well as a front sight adjustment tool.

The CYMA Platinum AKS-74U boasts a whole host of pre-upgraded internals. Out of the box, you get an EShooter ETU that allows for switching between SEMI/AUTO functions to new firing modes like Binary and Burst, through simple trigger-based programming, along with pre-cocking adjustment. The Platinum Series also features an active brake and protection system against blockages and battery levels, which ensures prolonged, trouble-free use. Other than that, this AK AEG also has a steel-teeth 13:1 ratio gear set, 8mm ball bearings, an aluminum ball bearing piston head, a double-sealed cylinder head, a bearing spring guide, and a high-speed motor. All of this allows the gun to hit a stable 25 RPS, which is very respectable for a budget AK AEG out of the box.
