About the work

New Zealand born artist Francis Upritchard created the limited edition Harlequin Head (2014) to accompany Do What You Will, her Whitechapel Gallery Children's Commission, a new installation made specially for young audiences and presented at the Whitechapel Gallery from 10th June-28th September 2014.

About the artist

Upritchard's work is rooted in cultural history, rituals, and storytelling - from the 1960's hippie movement and psychedelia to gothic folklore and beyond. Often re-interpreting history through playfully imagined 'found' artifacts or curios, she engages the viewer's imagination in all manner of weird and wonderful momento mori.

Upritchard was born in 1976 in New Plymouth New Zealand and is represented by Kate MacGarry, London.

Selected Exhibitions

In 2009 Upritchard represented New Zealand at the 53rd Venice Biennale and her work is included in A Thousand Doors, NEON and the Whitechapel Gallery at The Gennadius Library of The American School of Classical Studies at Athens in Greece (4 May - 30 June 2014.).
