This 18k gold locket exhibits a mastery of bas relief sculpture. An eagle sits perched on a branch with its magnificent wings open to display the bird in all its glory. Because the locket is figural, the shape of the locket echos the shape of the wingspan. The head of the eagle has such high relief that it is three dimensional, and rises out of the plane of the locket. The feathers are realistically carved in stunning detail, and the eagle perches on a strong branch that contains an Old Mine Cut diamond set in platinum.
The locket is precision-made, and opens and closes with a click. Inside of the locket there is space for two photos underneath carefully shaped frames that can be popped in and out of the piece. The unique shape of the frames indicates that they were made specifically for this locket. The interior of the locket has an acid wash that gives it a beautiful matte finish.
The locket is from the Edwardian era. It weighs 19 grams, and measures 1” x 1”. It is 1/4” thick, and the bas relief is 3/8” thick in its highest places. It has a wide bail that measures 8.5 x 10.5 mm. The Old Mine Cut diamond is bright and lively, 3.25mm in diameter.
