Klipsch R-1650-W In-Wall Speaker (Each) at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The R-1650-W is a 2-way in-wall speaker from Klipsch (Indianapolis, Indiana, USA), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Part of Klipsch's Reference architectural series, it is engineered to deliver compelling music and movie sound performance in both home and commercial environments at an accessible price point, without taking up any floor or shelf space. A 6.5" Polymer Cone Woofer with a large motor structure pairs with a 1" Polymer Dome Tweeter to cover a measured frequency response of 53Hz to 20kHz (+/-3dB) at 88dB sensitivity and 8 ohms, with 35W RMS and 140W peak power handling. A recommended amplifier power of 70W is specified. The R-1650-W fits into a standard 13" x 8" cutout in new or existing construction, and its paintable aluminum grille provides added rust resistance for installation in moisture-prone areas including bathrooms and kitchens. Compatible with the optional IK-650-W installation kit and the ME-650-W fire-rated enclosure, both sold separately.

Performance, Reliability and Durability at an Affordable Price

The R-1650-W occupies the practical entry tier of Klipsch's Reference in-wall speaker lineup, built around a 6.5" polymer cone woofer backed by a large motor structure that provides the magnet force and voice coil surface area for high sensitivity and strong bass output relative to the speaker's modest 35W RMS power rating. The polymer cone provides a combination of rigidity and self-damping that produces accurate, consistent bass and midrange reproduction without the coloration that softer paper cones can introduce under sustained drive. A 1" polymer dome tweeter handles the high-frequency output through 20kHz with smooth, broad dispersion character suited to the wide variety of installation positions typical in whole-home distributed audio systems. At 88dB sensitivity, the R-1650-W is the most power-efficient choice among Klipsch's Reference in-wall options for modest amplifier power levels, producing adequate listening volume in standard rooms from the 35W RMS the speaker handles. The 53Hz lower extension gives the R-1650-W useful bass presence for music and cinema use in rooms where supplementary subwoofer support is available for the deepest bass frequencies. The aluminum grille is paintable to match any wall color and provides rust resistance for bathroom and kitchen installations where the wall surface experiences humidity cycles that can affect the longevity of steel grilles over time.

Installation Flexibility for Home and Commercial Use

The R-1650-W installs in both new construction and retrofit applications through a 13" x 8" drywall cutout at 3.5" mounting depth, using conventional cam-style mounting dogs that tighten against the back of the drywall for a secure fit. The optional IK-650-W installation kit (sold separately) adds a pre-construction bracket, mud ring, and color-coded hardware for new construction framing applications where the speaker is installed before drywall. The optional ME-650-W fire-rated enclosure (sold separately) installs in the wall cavity behind the speaker to meet local building code fire separation requirements in residential and commercial construction, and also improves room-to-room acoustic isolation by providing a sealed cavity around the speaker's rear. With a 6.5" cutout format shared with the CS-16W, DS-160W, PRO-16RW, and PRO-160RPW, the R-1650-W is a practical and cost-effective starting point in the Klipsch in-wall lineup, with straightforward upgrade pathways to higher-performing models within the same cutout dimension.

Key Features

  • 6.5" Polymer Cone Woofer with Large Motor Structure: A large magnet and voice coil assembly drives the polymer cone woofer for high sensitivity and strong bass output relative to the speaker's power rating, covering bass and midrange reproduction from 53Hz with the consistency and moisture resistance of polymer cone construction.
  • 1" Polymer Dome Tweeter: A 1" polymer dome delivers high-frequency response through 20kHz with smooth, broad dispersion for clear highs across the full listening area in a variety of installation positions.
  • 53Hz to 20kHz Frequency Response: The full 53Hz lower extension provides useful bass presence for music and home theater applications, suited to use with a supplementary subwoofer in dedicated cinema rooms or on its own in secondary distributed audio zones where full-range bass is less critical.
  • 88dB Sensitivity at 8 Ohms: Delivers comfortable listening levels from modest per-channel power, compatible with multi-zone whole-home audio distribution amplifiers and standard AV receivers at the 35W RMS power level the speaker handles.
  • Paintable Aluminum Grille: The aluminum grille accepts standard interior paint for wall-color matching and provides rust resistance in moisture-prone installations such as bathrooms, kitchens, and covered outdoor areas, offering greater longevity in humid environments than steel grilles of equivalent design.
  • New Construction and Retrofit Compatible: Installs in any new or existing structure through a 13" x 8" drywall cutout. Compatible with the optional IK-650-W installation kit for new construction framing and the ME-650-W fire-rated enclosure for building code compliance (both sold separately).
  • Infinite Baffle Enclosure: The wall cavity provides the acoustic working environment at 3.5" mounting depth, using the standard 13" x 8" format shared with multiple Klipsch in-wall speaker models for straightforward upgrade compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Klipsch R-1650-W?

The Klipsch R-1650-W is a 2-way in-wall speaker from Klipsch's Reference architectural series, featuring a 6.5" polymer cone woofer with a large motor structure and a 1" polymer dome tweeter. It delivers a frequency response of 53Hz to 20kHz at 88dB sensitivity and 8 ohms, with 35W RMS and 140W peak power handling. Its paintable aluminum grille provides rust resistance for bathroom and kitchen use, and it installs through a 13" x 8" drywall cutout in new or existing construction.

How does the Klipsch R-1650-W compare to the CS-16W and the DS-160W?

The Klipsch R-1650-W, CS-16W, and DS-160W all share the same 13" x 8" cutout footprint and can be interchanged in an existing drywall opening, but they belong to different series with different acoustic approaches. The R-1650-W from the Reference series uses a polymer cone woofer and polymer dome tweeter at 35W RMS and 88dB sensitivity, with a paintable aluminum grille and a longer product history suited to home and commercial use. The CS-16W from the Custom Series uses polymer woofer and tweeter drivers at 40W RMS and 91dB sensitivity with the Skyhook tool-free installation system and a magnetic steel grille. The DS-160W from the Designer Series steps up to a polypropylene woofer and silk dome tweeter with a round Tractrix horn at 50W RMS and 91dB sensitivity, adding horn-loading for Klipsch's characteristic high-frequency efficiency. The R-1650-W is the right choice where the aluminum grille's rust resistance for wet-area installations is a priority, or where a simple, reliable Reference-series speaker at minimum cost is the design goal.

Can the Klipsch R-1650-W be installed in a bathroom?

Yes, the Klipsch R-1650-W is specifically designed for installation in moisture-prone environments including bathrooms and kitchens. The paintable aluminum grille provides rust resistance that steel grilles do not offer in high-humidity environments, and the polymer cone woofer and dome tweeter are moisture-resistant materials that maintain performance through the humidity cycles typical of bathroom installations. The R-1650-W is not rated as a fully weatherproof outdoor speaker and should be installed in enclosed interior spaces rather than locations with direct water exposure.

Does the Klipsch R-1650-W need a subwoofer?

In home theater applications, pairing the R-1650-W with a subwoofer and using AV receiver bass management to redirect content below 53Hz to the subwoofer output is recommended for proper full-range bass reproduction and LFE channel handling. In whole-home distributed audio zones used for background music at moderate listening levels, the 53Hz lower extension is adequate in most rooms without a separate subwoofer, depending on the musical content and listening priorities of the space. For surround or secondary channel home theater use, the AV receiver's bass management will handle the low-frequency routing automatically once the speaker is configured as a small speaker in the receiver's setup menu.

What amplifier is compatible with the Klipsch R-1650-W?

The Klipsch R-1650-W has a recommended amplifier power of 70W per channel and handles 35W RMS and 140W peak at 8 ohms. Any AV receiver or power amplifier capable of stable 8-ohm operation in the 35W to 70W per channel range is suitable. At 88dB sensitivity, the R-1650-W requires slightly more power than higher-sensitivity Klipsch Professional Series models to produce the same listening level, but any modern AV receiver from Denon, Yamaha, Marantz, or Onkyo at 50W or more per channel will drive the R-1650-W comfortably at comfortable listening volumes. For whole-home audio, multi-zone distribution amplifiers delivering 20W to 50W per channel at 8 ohms are adequate for background music playback in standard room sizes.

Where can I buy the Klipsch R-1650-W in Toronto or Canada?

The Klipsch R-1650-W In-Wall Speaker is available at Vinyl Sound, an authorized Klipsch dealer in Toronto, Canada. Vinyl Sound carries the full Klipsch architectural in-wall speaker lineup across the Reference, Custom, Designer, Professional, and THX Cinema series and can advise on system configuration, zone planning, amplifier matching, and installation accessory selection including the IK-650-W installation kit and the ME-650-W fire-rated enclosure for new construction and retrofit projects across the Toronto area and across Canada.

How does the aluminum grille differ from the magnetic grilles on newer Klipsch in-wall models?

The R-1650-W uses a traditional paintable aluminum grille that attaches to the speaker frame using the speaker's mounting hardware, providing rust resistance through the aluminum material in moisture-prone environments such as bathrooms and kitchens where steel grilles can corrode over time. Newer Klipsch Custom, Designer, and Professional Series models use powercoated magnetic steel grilles that attach and detach without tools, clips, or screws through magnetic attraction to the speaker bezel. The magnetic attachment of newer models makes grille removal for driver access more convenient, but the R-1650-W's aluminum grille offers moisture resistance that extends its appropriate installation environments into high-humidity spaces where magnetic steel grilles require additional consideration.

Good budget-friendly option
Color: Black, Size: Pack of 1, Color: Black, Size: Pack of 1
The chair arrived 4 days early and was easy to put together by following the instructions carefully. It feels sturdy and comfortable. It does support the lumbar region of the back and the arm rests are adjustable vertically as well as the head rest. I wish the arm rests were able to rotate in and out for added customization and that the back of the chair could be adjusted up and down for more precise support. But for a budget chair, it does a good job.

A solid chair for the budget conscious sitter.
Color: Black, Size: Pack of 1
While this is not THE most comfortable chair, let's face it - if you sit for long periods, what chair IS? I bought this chair because I'm making a career change. I've returned to school and spend hours at my desk. At the age of 50, sitting for a long time with my nose pointed toward a book can be hard on the seat, back and neck. I looked at all kinds of office chairs and settled on this one, primarily because it was on sale, was in my budget and so I clicked the "Add to cart" button and hoped for the best. It was delivered, and I had to work that evening, and when I got home my 17-year-old son had assembled it. My theory on the simplicity of assembly can be deduced from that sentence above. He didn't have any extra parts left over and the chair was complete! I sat down. I leaned back. I shifted the lever that keeps the chair in an upright position and sat straight up. Okay! I can live with this. It has been almost two full months of using this chair and I have no problems. Pros: easy to assemble sufficient comfort level - adequate cushion in the seat can be leaned back or pop the lever in to stay straight up rollers on bottom headrest is adjustable affordable easy to clean arm-rests can be moved up or down height adjustment is self-explanatory - you'll figure it out the "lumbar" support is actually comfortable - it's "there" if you back up to it but if you scoot forward just a bit, you won't feel it if you don't want to sit like that Overall this seems like a chair that's going to last me for a few years, at least, and not fall apart. In the context of size, I'm not a small or extra larger person. I'm an average middle-aged woman with meat on the bones. The seat is plenty big enough. I would recommend this chair as an upgrade to the hand-me-down office chair that just isn't comfortable any longer.

Love this chair!
Color: Black, Size: Pack of 1
I had an office chair that cost $300 more than this chair - had it for years, then things started breaking down on it. I read about this chair and, wow! I wish I had known about it sooner. It's more comfortable and it's not a chore to sit for a couple of hours working on designs. Wonderful design - supports my back well and it's very stable, easy to adjust.

Good chair with some quality issues
Color: Black, Size: Pack of 1
I've been using this chair for 12+ hours a day for the last 5 or 6 months and so far it is much better than my last chair I bought at Staples with a few problems. First, overall the chair is still comfortable when set properly, the cushion on the bottom is a little worn out but is still comfortable and I find the backrest comfortable except for the lumbar support which has very little cushioning and feels like a plastic brick being pushed into my back, however I find that I can keep it mostly out of the way most of the time and it isn't noticeable when I carry most of my weight on my upper back area while reclining. The reclining angle is super comfortable and the mesh on the back is not noticeably worn out. I like the headrest which is made of a cushioned mesh, its not better than a pillow but it's very comfortable to be able to rest your head in a chair you are going to sit in for long hours and gives good support. The arm rests don't feel amazing, they have a very stiff plasticky cushion feeling that I'm not much a fan of in terms of pure comfort but they get the job done as I mostly only rest my elbows on them when typing. The arm rest adjustment has a pretty good height range and I keep them at the highest settings and set as close to the chair as possible. While the chair may be comfortable, I have had some quality issues that bring down my opinion of the chair. First, my right arm rest does not go as high as my left arm rest and I have to set the left one down two positions to match the right one Second, the back rest locking for the upright position is broken but I can rarely get it to work as long as I don't put much weight on the back. I would imagine that most people would want to lock the chair upright as opposed to the other positions. Third, the 3 screws holding in the backrest untighten themselves over time, causing the backrest to move to its furthest back position and rock left or right if I lean on either side. When I tighten them again they will usually last about 1-2 weeks before becoming mostly loose again. There is no danger of the screws completely falling out though, just losing their tightness Lastly, I'm not sure how stable or secure the wood panel at the bottom of the seat that everything attaches to is strong enough, I used to have my armrests adjusted out further from the center but when I would lift up on my arms to adjust my seating position I would occasionally hear a sound of the wood stressing under the torque from the armrests. since I moved both armrests as close to the center as I can this has not happened; I would like them a little bit wider but I don't want to risk breaking the chair over it. Also, one of the factory-installed screws in the bottom seat panel fell out and wont stay back in but I haven't noticed any problems other than the risk of stepping on a screw caused by it While this is likely the most comfortable chair I've ever sat in, I have to give it 3 stars for the uncomfortable lumbar support and the quality control issues. If the QC issues were fixed I could easily give this chair a 4 star review
