Born in Philadelphia, Bill Bell is entirely self-taught and took up painting as his full time career in 1982 after first being a musician and record company executive.

Working in acrylics he creates, bright, richly detailed, enigmatic and complex scenes. Bell adds that he paints "nostalgia and nonsense", "nostalgia for the world that used to be and nonsense for the wolrd of my dreams".

Whimsies, which are essentially a puzzle piece crafted into a recognisable shape such as a flower or bird, are an historical link to the Victorian puzzle-making past. As the name suggests, the original Victorian puzzle cutters added the individual pieces on a whim and so the term whimsy was born.
