Description: Dypsis lutescens, commonly known as the Areca Palm or Butterfly Palm, is a popular tropical plant admired for its graceful, arching fronds and clumping growth habit. This palm is highly valued for its decorative appeal and ability to thrive indoors as well as outdoors in tropical and subtropical climates.

Flowers: The Areca Palm produces small, inconspicuous flowers that are typically yellow or cream-colored. These flowers are arranged in clusters on branched inflorescences that emerge from the base of the crown shaft. The flowers are followed by small, oval-shaped fruits that turn from green to yellow-orange as they mature.

Foliage: The foliage of Dypsis lutescens consists of long, arching fronds with numerous narrow leaflets that are bright green and feathery. The fronds grow from multiple slender stems, creating a dense, lush canopy. The bright green foliage adds a fresh and tropical look to any setting.

Form and Size: Dypsis lutescens has a clumping growth habit, with multiple slender, bamboo-like stems emerging from the base. Each stem can reach up to 6-10 meters (20-33 feet) in height, while the overall spread of the palm can be 3-4 meters (10-13 feet). Its tall, graceful form makes it an excellent choice for adding height and structure to gardens and landscapes.

Growing Conditions:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to partial shade. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning, but too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves.
  • Soil: Well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter. A slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal.
  • Water: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the growing season. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging. Once established, it can tolerate some drought.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm, tropical to subtropical climates. Hardy in USDA zones 10-11. Protect from frost and cold temperatures.
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity levels. Regular misting or placement near a humidity tray can help maintain the necessary moisture in the air if grown indoors.

Uses: Dypsis lutescens is primarily grown for its ornamental value. It makes a stunning focal point in garden beds, borders, and large containers. The palm's tall, graceful form and lush foliage create a tropical feel, making it ideal for themed gardens and landscapes. It also makes a striking indoor plant for large spaces with adequate light.

Maintenance: This plant is relatively low-maintenance. Regular watering and fertilization during the growing season will promote healthy growth. Prune away any dead or damaged fronds to maintain its appearance. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Notes: Dypsis lutescens is non-toxic and safe to grow around pets and children. It is relatively pest-resistant but may occasionally attract spider mites or scale insects, which can be treated with appropriate insecticides.

Companion Plants: Dypsis lutescens pairs well with other tropical and subtropical plants that have similar growing requirements, such as:

  • Heliconia species
  • Alpinia species (Ornamental Gingers)
  • Philodendron species
  • Monstera deliciosa

Common Name: Areca Palm, Butterfly Palm

Great product, mic and camera compatible
I bought this to use a webcam with a built-in mic on my Microsoft Windows Surface Pro 8. When I first plugged in the webcam both the camera and the mic were recognized, however the mic was not picking up sound. After double checking the device settings, my privacy settings, the device drivers, and everything else I simply unplugged and replugged the camera in. Then everything worked as I had hoped. Great value for a great product. I trust Anker to reliably protect and provide stability for all of my devices. Simple product, plug and play. Sleek, simple design

Simple and not Drama claim process.
’ve had Asurion coverage for a couple of years and never needed to use it until recently, when my pool salt cell (less than two years old) stopped working. I had purchased it with an Asurion protection plan, so I contacted them to start a claim. The process was simple and straightforward to follow. In the end, they honored the plan and covered the cost of my salt cell based on the value when I originally bought it. They issued me a gift card that I could use on Amazon for that amount. While prices have gone up and a new cell now costs about $200 more, it was still definitely worth having the coverage. Overall, I’m satisfied with how the claim was handled.

Love this protection plan
Quick and easy. My daughter's cracked her screen on her phone, as soon as it happened I went on the app, filed the claim. Ten minutes later I received the email with the shipping lable. The following day I dropped the phone off at ups and 4 hours later I received the digital gift card. Ive filed several claims since getting the protection plan and with four kids its definitelysomething im glad to have especially since i dont have to buy a protectionplan for each item now. I have filed claims for electric scooter the stoped working for no reason, my son's phone stopped charging, my oldest daughter cracked her phone screen, my son's video game controllers up and died and each time it was quick and easy and no fuss
