A life of following Jesus is no different today than it was for the few who followed Him 2000 years ago. It’s a knowing deep in our soul that He is the Way, the Truth, the Life. In the knowing, we choose daily to surrender to ourselves. This kind of radical love for Him becomes a way of living. No fanfare. Just a genuine longing for a life of obedience and faithfulness to the One who rescued our souls. This is the narrow way, and for the people whose life is in Christ Jesus, our hearts should long to find it.
Those from long ago had His physical feet to sit at while He shared His Father’s love for them. One felt compelled to wash Jesus’ feet with her tears, and those who thought he was crazy nailed them to the cross. Today, through His death, His Spirit guides the one who calls upon His name. He is the living water that loves to wash our sins away, not just once, but every time we come to Him with a contrite heart. He loves to teach us about the things of old and to come, and His Word nourishes the most hungry appetites.
Whether then or now, Christ longs for us to die to our flesh. In that death, we are crucified in Him, not so that we can live, but so that He can live through us.
Very few chose the narrow way when Jesus walked among his people over 2000 years ago. Even fewer choose to take the narrow way today. Yet, it is the surest way for sinners like me to live this life abundantly and freely.
In Matthew 7:13–14, Jesus said, “Enter through the narrow gate. Wide is the gate, and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”
