The Makonde are an ethnic group from Tanzania and northern Mozambique. Their Tree of Life sculptures were especially sought after in the 1950s and 60s. The sculptures represent the family unit and are essentially family trees. They depict family members from past and present holding each other up and growing taller and stronger through mutual support. An exceptional example of Makonde artistry.

This is a unique African Intricately Carved Ebony Family Tree of Life from the Makonde Tribe from Tanzania. The carvings typically include a column of people. They commonly depict members of extended family often representing multiple generations. People are often depicted climbing or holding each other up representing support, as well as people showing and performing traditional tasks and local work such as cooking or farming.
