Tending a small garden in a raised position can be a matter of preference or need, and the Kombi Dual Function Raised Bed & Cold Frame is the perfect answer for either. With the soil height at 24”, gardening could not be easier. By standing or sitting, whether its age, injury or simply comfort, you can now nurture seedlings, vegetables and flowers from a position of ease. Regardless of that or if you just want to garden on your patio or deck’s hard surface, say goodbye to the up & down on your knees.

  • Base Frame is 51 in. x 24 in. x 24 in., with three tiers of interlocking blocks
  • Blocks are Nordic weathered grey in color and UV protected for long term beauty and use
  • Block wall manufacturing structure is high grade polyethylene made with eco-friendly foaming construction, BPA free, and 100% recyclable
  • Cold Frame is 15.75” tall in back, 12” tall in front, and 50” long. Panels are 4mm twin wall polycarbonate, UV stabilized and protected for long use
  • 2 Ventilation supports with multiple height settings. Insulation sealing strips restrict cold air movement and temperature loss

Extend your growing season

Start growing in late winter and wrap up your final harvest in late fall. Both the base and the cold frame have thermal properties that can help capture maintain enough extra warmth to start and sustain growth longer than normal. The panels of the cold frame are 4mm twin walled polycarbonate which resist the flow of temperature variants into and out of the growing space inside.

Dual Function

Another unique feature of the Kombi is its dual function, thus its Austrian reference to ‘combination’. While many will use the base and cold frame together for its raised gardening height, others may separate the two once their starts have matured, and start two growing areas. Certain plants in early spring may still want the protection of the cold frame and its thermal panels, while other plantings are ready for the open air. Simply detach the cold frame and set it on the ground either for new starts or the original starts. That leaves you with the raised bed to continue the originals, or new plants for heading into spring.

Interlocking base blocks

The base blocks interlock and snap together, measure 24” tall and 24” deep front to back, and 51” end to end, providing over 8 square feet of growing space. The base blocks are an attractive woody weathered grey, and made of a special foamed polyethylene which adds an extra layer of insulation to the soil within. They are eco-friendly in their manufacture, BPA free and 100% recyclable, as well as resistant to cold temperature cracking for long lasting beauty and use.

Cold Frame

The Cold Frame itself has a pre-assembled lid and is entirely enclosed within 4mm twin walled panels that restrict temperature flow enough to create a warmer interior that is conducive to an early start of the growing season. Just a few degrees make a difference. These translucent panels allow the sun’s rays to thermally penetrate the interior space even on colder cloudy days, just enough to instigate growth in most climates, before & after the normal growing seasons.

Ventilation

In warmer or hot weather days, use the two ventilator latches to raise or lower the lid opening to four different positions. Use the locking brackets and insulation strips to attach and seal the cold frame to the base. For those who need or prefer even more raised gardening space, the Kombi can be linked end to end with more bases & cold frames, for entire row of extended gardening.

Assembly & Soil Prep Notes

Including unpacking the parts, the base takes approximately 20 minutes to completely assemble, with the help of only screwdriver and pliers. The cold frame takes another 20 minutes to snap together and attach to the base. Depending on assembly experience, the entire Kombi can be assembled in 30 minutes or less. See the assembly video for shortcuts and more information on the benefits of the Kombi Mini-Greenhouse Cold Frame. Consider adding bales of peat moss to the bottom of the base if you only need rich soil for the upper 8-12 inches.

Excellent build quality, easy to set up
The stand is sturdy and heavy. As far as I can tell, the wood and metal are genuine and high quality. I had no issues with the base (or included controller stand) being unstable or wobbly. Both were rock solid. You can slide the controller stand left or right, but there's no height adjustment for the headphone stand. However most headphones should still fit just fine. Setup was very easy. There's a few screws to connect the parts but that's it, and there's really no way to put anything in the wrong spot. The controller stand doesn't physically attach to anything, but it does have little rubber feet to keep it from sliding around easily. Overall a very well-designed and aesthetically pleasing addition to my desk!
