▪︎ABOUT                                                                                                                              There are two techniques used in this piece. The first being the ikat which is the middle sections with the bird and human motifs and the stripe section at top and bottom of sarong.
The word ikat comes from a Malay word meaning to tie. The yarn are being tied or bound first, as a form of resist, in the desired pattern and design and then dyed before being woven into textile. Hence the frayed look in the motifs typical of ikat fabric.

The second technique is the buna, the top and bottom border section . This is where colourful threads are being wrapped around the warp to form patterns inbetween passes of the weft.

This piece has been woven in three separate narrow pieces and then sewn together to form a bigger piece sewn in tube skirt form known as sarong.

The ikat is in a rare singing people and bird motif, symbolising festivities.
