This beautiful ikat piece is a tais (sarong) from the village of Manlea, Timor, Indonesia.
It is suitable as a bed cover, throw or wall hanging and is perfect as a one of a kind textile for any interior project. Will look great in an ethnic, boho and eclectic style home decor or for the avid vintage textile collector.

▪︎As with vintage items, there are signs of wear and tear and dirt markings but in good condition as a whole.
▪︎ABOUT
There are two techniques used in this piece. The first being the ikat which is the two middle panels and stripe border at both ends of sarong.
The word ikat comes from a Malay word meaning to tie. The yarn are being tied or bound first, as a form of resist, in the desired pattern and design and then dyed before being woven into textile. Hence the frayed look in the motifs typical of ikat fabric.
The second technique is the buna. This is where colourful threads are being wrapped around the warp to form patterns inbetween passes of the weft.
This piece has been woven in four separate narrow pieces and then sewn together to form a bigger piece.
The diamond and human/crocodile(?) motifs are portrayed in the buna section .
Beautiful touch with buna on the black border top and bottom of sarong.
