COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Foundations of Industrial-Organisational Psychology course. This program provides a solid exploration of how psychological science is applied to understanding human behaviour in workplaces, improving organisational systems, and enhancing employee performance and wellbeing. By studying the evolution of industrial-organisational (I-O) psychology, its scientific underpinnings and its research methodologies, you will gain a rich appreciation of how this discipline shapes modern organisational practice, informs people-management decisions, and contributes to more productive, ethical and evidence-based work environments.

This course begins with an explanation of what industrial-organisational psychology is, the science and practice that underpin it, and the roots that shaped its emergence. This section explores the early history of I-O psychology along with what an I-O psychologist actually does in practice, from organisational research and assessment design to training, performance evaluation and workplace wellbeing initiatives. You will consider how societal and economic changes influenced the discipline and contributed to its development into a respected applied psychological field.

Another learning area examines the major historical periods that shaped industrial-organisational psychology, including World War I and the 1920s, the Great Depression and World War II, and the post-war period through to the modern era. This section explains how technological advances, economic shifts and workforce changes drove growth in personnel selection, human factors engineering, job design and organisational development. You will also explore the field’s current trends and future directions as it adapts to globalisation, digital transformation and rapidly evolving work conditions.

A further learning area explores the research methods used in industrial-organisational psychology. This includes the basics of research methods and design, the social science research paradigm, and the goals of systematic inquiry. You will examine the steps of the research process, from formulating a problem or issue to generating hypotheses, selecting an appropriate research design, collecting data, and applying robust analytical methods. Examples of common hypotheses in I-O psychology research help illustrate how theory informs practice.

Another learning area covers the major research designs used in the discipline. This includes the experimental method, quasi-experiments, the correlational method, complex correlational designs and meta-analysis. You will also examine the case study approach and how mixed-method designs can yield practical insights for applied workplace settings. Discussion of how each design is used highlights the strengths, limitations and applications of each method.

A further learning area focuses on the measurement of variables in I-O psychology. This includes observational techniques, self-report techniques, and the key psychometric issues of reliability and validity. You will explore how work outcomes are measured, why measurement quality is essential, and how poorly designed measures can compromise research findings or organisational decisions. This section also examines how research results are interpreted and used in real organisational contexts.

Another learning area examines the ethical issues in research and practice. This includes protecting participant confidentiality, managing conflicts of interest, ensuring fair treatment and avoiding misuse of psychological tools. You will review the ethical principles that guide both scientific research and applied consultancy work within organisations.

The final learning area explores the statistical analysis of research data. This includes descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and the analytic techniques used in experimental and correlational research. You will consider how statistical methods support evidence-based practice, how to interpret research outcomes responsibly, and how data-driven decisions enhance workforce management and organisational performance.

By the end of this course, you will be able to explain the foundations and evolution of industrial-organisational psychology, understand and evaluate research designs and statistical methods, interpret workplace psychological data, recognise ethical responsibilities, and apply evidence-based principles to improve organisational functioning and employee outcomes.

the garden was a real place, legends do have seeds of truth
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
very well researched and the use of multiple sources/ events used to lock in events and CHRONOLOGIES is done with a sense of going where the evidence leads, instead of trying to CREATE a narrative. it is amazing how the people and place names shift thru the various empires and then later, the legends. very interesting that the exodus event vanquishes egypt, the the hyksos/ indo europeans take over and loot upper egypt. I totally agree with shishak mistake and new chronology. I find it fascinating king Akhenaten and tut were contemporary with king david and soloman. very interesting read about etruscians/ rome and carthage being remnants of troy. I love history this was a very interesting read. but be prepared for a menagerie of languages and names.....

Time will tell.
Format: Paperback
The New Chronology, the unorthodox historical time frame upon which this book is based, may be regarded by Professor Kitchen and other expert scholars in this field as 'one hundred per cent rubbish' but that does not prevent this book from being a very interesting and enjoyable read. As to the correctness or otherwise of the theory advanced, only time will tell.

From Eden to Exile: The Five Thousand Year History of The People of The Bible
Format: Paperback
Well written book about a very interesting subject. Author is basically restructuring the traditionally accepted royal dynasty time periods of the Egyptian Pharaohs. I do accept that the traditional ancient time spans are mostly not accurate. This inaccuracy causes problems when trying to date other cultures of the same periods. The prime example is the biblical history of the Hebrews. When adjusting the Egyptian historical writings to around 200 years later you then do see references to accounts of a people who might have been the ancient Hebrews. It is interesting that we accept Egyptian history, as written in stone, but not the Hebrew written history. This author, and others, are disputing this accepted dating of Egyptian royal dynastic rule. The author tells a purely historical biblical history leaving religious commentary out of it. I don't agree with all his story but a great part of it is very possible. The bible is a religious and historical writing but it is possible to separate the two. The possibility of this new time frame being correct would change present day archaeology dramatically and would likely confirm much of secular biblical history. Ancient history of a particular culture must be correct in order to say if another culture existed at the same time. Right now Egyptian dating is being used to judge as to whether the biblical history is true. This of course is a very dubious yard stick. Who says ancient Egyptian writings are 100% true? Many have been found to be for political & religious purposes and not necessarily true. This book is an eye opener and puts a big ? mark about current historical dating and what is true and false about ancient Israel !

Hmmm.
Format: Paperback
LOVED Pharaohs and Kings. Agree with New Chronology. But here, there is much to disagree with as he tries to explain away pre-flood events, he ties in Scripture with other local peoples ancient stories in ways that make God and His works look like a local god, little "g" - nothing to see here kind of god. The angel God places at the entrance to the Garden of Eden with a fiery sword a demon? The ark made out of reeds? Local flood, etc. I annotated the first half of this book to death, but after the flood, I annotated less and less as there was much more to agree with. I am open minded - I know there is archeological evidence as well as epigraphical evidence. But if it completely disagrees with Biblical text, it cannot work. I like Dave Rohl. You will probably get a lot out of most of the book, but he takes us completely down a different path than I expected pre-flood.

GREAT!!!
Format: Paperback
I have huge amounts of respect for this guy. He is so intelligent and really researches things, he is one of those people who sees what the average guy cant. This book is great and fascinating. cant put it down. I hate these books that are clearly not the truth but they just want to make money selling books...THIS IS NOT ONE OF THOSE... It is real info that is true history.
