Pale straw yellow. Delicious aromas of red apple and white nectarine are interwoven with grapefruit pith and notes of candied mango. These primary aromas are supported by nougat notes and complex hints of brazil nuts and toffee. This wine is soft and smooth with a lovely polished feel. Plenty of wild fermentation has made it textural and complex whilst retaining fresh, bright acidity. The flavours are mouthfilling and give way to a long, juicy finish.

The fruit for this wine came from the beautiful Meadowbank Estate vineyard in the Taylor’s Pass area of Marlborough’s Southern Valleys.

The season started cool and unsettled, but temperatures quickly warmed up leading to an early, quick flowering. The last substantial rainfall of summer was on 17th December and after that Marlborough dried out. This wasn’t obvious early in January as ash drifting across from the Australian bushfires resulted in a lot of cooler cloudy weather to keep the vineyards green. However, the season warmed up heading into February, and the grapes went through veraison in very good, clean condition. In the last week or so the nights cooled off, allowing extra time for flavour development heading into harvest. On Monday 23rd March, as we were handpicking our first Sauvignon Blanc, we heard that New Zealand was heading into lockdown for a month. Thankfully, harvest was able to continue and the weather played its part superbly. Apart from the stress caused by virus, the actual harvest was a breeze with some of the best condition fruit we have ever seen. The last grapes were harvested on 6th April and brought the surreal vintage to a close for the Jules Taylor Wines team.

The grapes were harvested carefully by hand and machine, then taken to the winery for fermentation using a variety of techniques. Whole cluster pressed portions went directly into French oak barrels for a wild ferment on high solids. Other portions were tank fermented and some were cold settled and partially tank fermented and then sent to barrels mid-ferment. The yeast lees in the barrels were stirred frequently over a nine month period to add body and complexity, and the wine underwent full malolactic fermentation to lower the acid profile. After its extended nap in the barrels, the various parcels were pumped back to tank, blended then bottled.

Food Pairing: Try it with chicken roasted on a bed of lemon and oregano potatoes, or served with a Moroccan couscous salad. Or for a lighter option try it with a farro or cracked wheat salad with roasted tomatoes, broad beans and a tahini dressing.

"You know, I knew you were mine the moment I saw you, the moment I heard your voice. Fauna, you're it. You're all that matters to me. You're my home. Be my player two for life?" I received this book as an ARC. Remy and Fauna's story was perfectly them. I hate what Fauna had to go through, but I'm so glad she had Remy and Trevor in her corner, then the Mall Ratz. They showed Prue what true friendship is supposed to look like. This book hit very close to home for me, I used to have a friend's like that. They didn't go the exact route Prue did, but they bullied me. So it took me, meeting the right person to be able to be the person I am today and no longer having those people in my life. But I just love how this book spoke to me personally and will speak to a lot of people!

Full of everything you want
Format: Hardcover
I read this book in two sittings. Ate it up like the delicious Carolina meal that it is. It's only the second MG witch book I have experienced since I am a big fan of contemporary realism. BUT I LOOOOOVED it. What a homer of a debut. We are all Katybird and Delpha, in so many ways. And my lord, it was like reading Tori Amos' childhood soul in some ways (I happen to know too much about her). What a gift to have read this book. Please give it as a gift to ever middle grader you know. Stunning. Well paced, and full of heart and grit. I look forward to more books from Ash. I believe anything they write will be worth my time. I imagine they can write a powerful YA, in addition to MG. Their style lends itself to capturing humanity on many levels. Big fan!

Best danged zombie romps I've ever read!
Format: Hardcover
This is one of the best danged zombie romps I've ever read! From the moment I saw its gorgeous, whimsical cover, I was dying to read Cattywampus! And it. Is. Brilliant. From the animated outhouse to the fascinating folksy setting and the major Elphie/Galinda vibes from MCs Delpha and Katybird, I fell for this story so hard. This is one of my favorite Roaring 20s debuts by far. I never tire of the magic of true friendship! (Or enemies-to-frenemies-to-besties!)

Rival witch families and friendship
Format: Paperback
Read if you like: 🧙‍♀️ Young witches 🌈 Inclusive representation 🤝 Found family & healing 🌲 Small-town magic 2️⃣ POV 📍 A holler in rural North Carolina Cattywampus follows Delpha and Katybird, two girls from rival witch families who are forced into close proximity and slowly begin to form an unlikely friendship. As old grudges and local legends surface, both girls must confront family expectations, hidden truths, and what it really means to belong. This was such a sweet and heartfelt middle grade read. I loved watching Delpha and Katy’s friendship grow, especially given the history between their families. The twist involving Delpha’s father added emotional depth, and the healing that unfolds by the end was really satisfying. Cozy, thoughtful, and grounded in a strong sense of place, this story beautifully balances magic with big feelings and growth.
