The Piping Rock Club 1911-2011 was written by John Rousmaniere, with photography by Anthony Edgeworth. The book was published in a limited edition with a slipcase for the club’s 100 year anniversary. It is their first and only history.

Piping Rock’s original membership rolls were a who’s who of the pre-war establishment including J. P. Morgan, Jr., Louis C. Tiffany, Conde Nast, Averell Harriman, Percy Chubb, John S. Phipps, William Vincent Astor, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and Frank N. Doubleday. President Theodore Roosevelt was an honorary member. In addition to being the course designer, Charles Blair Macdonald, was also a member and chairman of the golf committee.

Piping Rock was established in the model of a classic club of its era, organized to allow its members to enjoy country pursuits. The club was named based on a legend that Native Indians used a large rock on the property as a location to smoke the “pipe of peace,” thus, the piping rock. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, writing in 1909, described the fact that the property the club secured was done so, “because of its absolute perfection of country sports,” and noted that it was set in “the land of princely estates,” and was ideal for, “providing on a large and elaborate scale for out-of-door sports with polo, pony racing, tennis, and possibly golf, and in any event cross country riding well to the fore.” As noted, the club’s focus was not initially golf; they also established a steeplechase course which included a grandstand for spectators.

Piping Rock today retains the air of its founding days. Driving up to the Dutch Colonial clubhouse flanked by a stone wall gives the visitor a sense of being a country gentleman or lady. The entire scene is one of a leisurely enclave. Nearby the clubhouse are beautifully maintained grass tennis courts. Surrounding the tennis courts, clubhouse, and polo fields is the rolling terrain of the golf course. Like the C.B. Macdonald-designed St. Louis Country Club, the visitor at Piping Rock is also drawn immediately to the prominence of the old polo field behind the clubhouse.

As courses designed by C. B. Macdonald and built by Seth Raynor do, Piping Rock follows their usual “prototype” hole patterns and includes renditions of a Long, Road, Biarritz, Redan, Eden, Knoll, Short, and Home holes.

The book is of a very high quality with Edgeworth’s usual top shelf standards of photographic excellence. It features graceful pictures of the golf course, some taken in the fall with autumn leaves in bloom. And it has pictures of the interior of the historic clubhouse. When the new club commissioned the architect, Guy Lowell, to design the clubhouse their mandate to him was to build, “the sort of thing that George Washington would have built if he had the money.” He didn’t disappoint.

The 168 page book also has lots of historic images of horse races and polo matches held at Piping Rock and pictures of C. B. Macdonald, the Prince of Wales and Bobby Jones, among others, at the club. As befits Piping Rock, it is a stately club history.

Perfect companion to other HBLYJS bracket systems — great aesthetic, versatility and functionality
I’m already a fan of the HBLYJS wall bracket system that I used in my daughter’s room, so I wanted to try this floor-to-ceiling option from the same brand for a slightly different look. The two coordinate perfectly — same black iron finish, same industrial-farmhouse aesthetic — and provided nice cohesion. What makes this system stand out is the flexibility in how you mount it. You can rest the uprights on the floor or hang them from the ceiling depending on your space and what works best structurally. That's a rare option and makes it easy to fit into rooms where a standard wall-mount wouldn't work as cleanly. I chose to hang them from the ceiling, because I personally love that look. Just make sure you mount these into studs! Like the bracket set, planks aren't included, but picking your own wood lets you match stain color and cut boards to the exact length you need. The heavy-duty pipe construction feels solid and the vertical design makes great use of wall space without eating into floor space. I definitely recommend the HBLYJS wall bracket systems for the great aesthetic, storage, versatility and functionality they provide. I will likely be buying a few more sets soon.

HBLYJS Industrial Pipe Shelving System
This shelving system gave my room a cool industrial look. The metal brackets feel heavy-duty and very stable. Installation took a little time but wasn’t difficult. I like that I can choose my own wood planks for customization. It holds a good amount of weight without sagging. The black iron finish looks great against the wall. This was a solid DIY upgrade for my space.

Easy storage, good holding power
This industrial pipe shelving system is a very nice way to add DIY storage to any room. The parts come well protected and are easy to assemble. They come with all the hardware one needs to install, though I used my own wall anchors because I like the ones I use and I know they work very well. I also decided in the end not to use the support legs because they would have had the shelves too low when mounted from the ceiling. Instead, I took those off and flipped the frames over so nothing would get in there, and I'll probably get nipples and caps from the hardware store to finish off the bottoms. The frames are finished in black, and resemble old galvanized gas pipes. As previously mentioned, assembly is easy enough and they accommodate whatever width of shelf you want to put up, within a reasonable limit. I used 36" shelves because that's the space I had to work with. The fact that each flange has three screws, assuming this is installed correctly, it should be rock-solid. I know mine is. I installed this in our laundry room / craft room in order to get more storage space, because it is so very busy in there. Given one could purchase the parts needed to build one of these for less, it's still a good value for the money because then after you buy those parts you have to clean and paint them, as well as prepare the boards. All I had to do was assemble these, and then prepare the boards, which made my life easier and the time saved was well worth the little extra. They also look fantastic with natural-colored oiled pine. I recommend these racks for their aesthetic, ascetic appearance, and their ability to hold a good amount of weight and storage, and not to mention if they're installed like mine, they will hold rolled leather hides like nobody's business.

Quick and easy - nice pipe kit.
Size: 4-Tier (Not included planks)
Pair these with some shelving boards from your local big box store, and you're in business. These look nice, and are easy to assemble. I had them up and on the wall in about 90 minutes.

Sturdy, Be mindful if a few things in advance
Size: 5-Tier (Not included planks), Size: 5-Tier (Not included planks)
Good quality. The black pipe compliments our decorating style so we are over all pleased. Be mindful of the following: - Needs a little bit of expertise in making sure all the flanges line up and are level/plumb. - Even if/when you pre assemble tubing according to printed instructions, the shelving won't line up and some connection parts will have to be loosened to line up. - I consider us (me & the hubs) little above average when it comes to DIY but this took some figuring out and cooperation during installation because we decided to align the holes on the flanges up with our studs to enforce the holding strength (for weight of books and family photo albums/picture boxes). This choice was prompted by the poor quality of plastic drywall anchors included with the product. Now that I have installed one, I will customize next time with more height (to accommodate taller children's books that don't fit the current set up) and a bit deeper (to accommodate a 12 inch shelf/wood insert). Aesthetically, it will not accommodate a book taller than about 9 inches. Our photo albums range up to 15 inches and because the shelving depth from back wall to front of wood shelf is about 12 inches, it hangs over the front too much to look balanced. With the current set up, I'm limited with what can be placed on the shelves - size wise. While this does not have anything to do with the quality of the product, you may not know to consider these aspects in advance so thats why I include it in my review.
