While brothers across the country were leaving to fight in the Civil War, Lucy’s friend and SAE brother, John B. Kent (Kentucky Military Institute, 1860), was one of the last to leave. Upon his departure, he entrusted Lucy with keeping the records of the Fraternity safe until the war was over.

Lucy did just that and has been credited with essentially saving the chapter and keeping the fraternity safe. Her devotion to SAE was rewarded by being the only honorary female initiate in Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Her loyalty represents what all members should strive for.
