An expanded edition of the definitive book on Ruth Asawa's fascinating life and her lasting contributions to American art.

The work of American artist Ruth Asawa (1926-2013) is brought into brilliant focus in this definitive book, originally published to accompany the first complete retrospective of Asawa's career, organized by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in 2006. This new edition features an expanded collection of essays and a detailed illustrated chronology that explore Asawa's fascinating life and her lasting contributions to American art. Beginning with her earliest works--drawings and paintings created in the 1940s while she was studying at Black Mountain College--this beautiful volume traces Asawa's flourishing career in San Francisco and her trajectory as a pioneering modernist sculptor who is recognized internationally for her innovative wire sculptures, public commissions, and activism on behalf of public arts education.

Through her lifelong experimentations with wire, especially its capacity to balance open and closed forms, Asawa invented a powerful vocabulary that contributed a unique perspective to the field of twentieth-century abstract sculpture. Working in a variety of nontraditional media, Asawa performed a series of remarkable metamorphoses, leading viewers into a deeper awareness of natural forms by revealing their structural properties. Through her art, Asawa transfigured the commonplace into metaphors for life processes themselves. The Sculpture of Ruth Asawa establishes the importance of Asawa's work within a larger cultural context of artists who redefined art as a way of thinking and acting in the world, rather than as merely a stylistic practice.

This updated edition includes a new introduction and more than fifty new images, as well as original essays that reflect on the impact of American political history on Asawa's artistic vision, her experience with printmaking, and her friendship with photographer Imogen Cunningham. Contributors include Susan Ehrens, Mary Emma Harris, Karin Higa, Jacqueline Hoefer, Emily K. Doman Jennings, Paul J. Karlstrom, John Kreidler, Susan Stauter, Colleen Terry, and Sally B. Woodbridge.

Published in association with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF).

Great For Dry Hair
I've never tried Batana Oil before, so I had no idea what to expect. It's a great oil for my hair. I love that it is all-natural oil and is more like a paste. It spreads easily on my hair. I love that I can put a tiny bit on my finger and rub it directly into my dry scalp. The oil has an interesting but pleasant smell. It's hard to describe. It reminds me a bit of a cross between coffee and cacao, but more nutty and mild. I like it. It's not too strong. The directions say to apply and leave in for 20 minutes, then wash out with a sulfate-free shampoo. I like to leave it in my hair for a day or two before washing it again. It's a great conditioning oil for dry and damaged hair. It might feel heavy on fine or thin hair, but I like it on my medium-thick hair. The only reason I dropped this a star is that I'm dubious of the claim that it promotes hair growth. I think it helps my dry hair from breaking off, but I don't think it can do much for most hair loss. However, for hair conditioning, this is definitely a five star product.

Single-ingredient moisturizing treatment with a pleasant smell
When this is described as "batana oil," that's exactly what it is. Not a dozen other ingredients with just a little bit of batana, no colors or fragrances, just batana oil. I love that about this. It's easy to use, just melt it into you hands and massage it into your scalp and hair. Folks with long hair would do well to concentrate on the ends since that's where you're less likely to get natural oil from your scalp to help keep the hair healthy. Leave it in for a bit, then wash it off in the shower with shampoo. Not at all complicated. I loved how my scalp felt afterward, definitely less itchy and "tight." as far as regrowing any hair or anything, I think the only thing that would help me is a miracle, so I'm not basing my review on that. The smell is nutty and very nice. Similar to the roasty notes of coffee or chocolate. Very pleasant and not "chemical" or perfumey smelling.

Nice Scent but Too Early to See Results
I’ve just started using this batana oil, so it’s too early to say if it actually helps with hair growth or thickness. I’ll need to use it consistently for a while before seeing real results. So far, I do like the smell—it has a nice scent and doesn’t feel overwhelming. The oil itself feels nourishing and easy to apply to the scalp and hair. The size is decent for the price, but like most hair treatments, the effectiveness will really depend on long-term use. Pros: Pleasant scent Feels nourishing on hair and scalp Easy to apply Cons: Too early to tell results Overall, it seems promising, but you’ll need to give it time to see if it actually delivers on the hair growth claims.
