On her first-ever holiday album For Christmas, Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Amanda Shires invites the world into a fantastically warped wonderland of her own making. Though there’s flying reindeer and fallen tinsel and angels serenely plucking harps, Shires’s finespun storytelling sheds light on the kind of holiday experiences and emotions that often go ignored in Christmas songs: the family drama and forced cheer, burnt-out frustration and elaborate fantasies of escaping off to some far-away tropical island. Mostly made up of original material from the Texas-bred musician, the album unfolds in a selection of piano songs touched with the timeless charm of Brill Building pop—a lovely setting for the luminous vocal presence she’s brought to a series of acclaimed solo albums and to her role as a member of The Highwomen. Revealing an entirely new side of Shires’s idiosyncratic mind, the result belongs to that rare breed of holiday music that feels undeniably resonant at any season of the year.

The follow-up to 2018’s critically lauded To The Sunset, For Christmas marks the realization of a longtime dream for Shires. “I’ve always wanted to make a record that’s true to what Christmas is like for me, and all the mixed emotions that come with it,” she says. “There’s the happiness of being with family, and then the reality that getting a bunch of your family members in the same room is maybe never a great idea. I’m one of those hopeless-romantic types, so there’s the romance and beauty of Christmas but also the sadness, especially when not everybody you’re used to having around gets to be there anymore. There’s a lot of nostalgia in these songs, but there’s a lot of reality too.”

Produced by Lawrence Rothman and recorded live at Sound Emporium Studios in her homebase of Nashville, For Christmas finds Shires working with bassist Jimbo Hart (her bandmate in Jason Isbell’s 400 Unit), pianist Peter Levin (a jazz musician she met while touring with The Gregg Allman Band), guitarist Pat Buchanan (Dolly Parton, The Chicks), and drummer Fred Eltringham (Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams). Over the course of four hot days in July, Shires and her collaborators laid down the album’s nine original songs and two covers (including Frank Loesser’s “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” and a darkly charged reimagining of “Silent Night”), infusing every track with the unbridled joy of the recording sessions. “We ate a ton of donuts and all wore Christmas hats, and the place was decked out in all these Christmas lights,” recalls Shires, who played fiddle and violin on For Christmas. “It’s hard to be in the studio sometimes, but everybody brought so much fun and humanity to the whole thing.”

Throughout For Christmas, Shires leads her audience on a whirlwind journey through the chaos of holidays, often spiking her nuanced reflection with a bit of goofball humor (“The pressure’s different when you’re writing Christmas songs as opposed to confessional songs or protest songs—there’s a chance to bring some comedy, and get more punny than normal,” she notes). Along the way, Shires presents such gems as “Blame It on the Mistletoe,” a tribute to the dizzying bliss of falling in love at holiday time (sample lyric: “I admit I was feeling a little ho-ho-hopeless/Thinking this crush was just one-sided”). One of several tracks featuring legendary gospel quartet The McCrary Sisters, the sublimely offbeat “Gone for Christmas” slinks along in a Grinch-inspired groove as Shires shares a litany of less-than-orthodox holiday wishes (“I want a date with Larry David/I want Costa Rica or the Caymans/And I want you gone for Christmas”). And on “Always Christmas Around Here,” For Christmas closes out with a riotously true-to-life portrait of the holiday’s aftermath (“A mess in the living room/There’s a wine all over the couch/My sisters aren’t speaking/Who’s crying now?”). “That song was my favorite to put together,” Shires points out. “John Prine had passed away not too long before, and he loved Christmas—he always had a Christmas tree up everywhere, even in the studio. I was thinking about all the problems that come with the holidays, and how difficult families can be, and I know I wrote a song he would say was pretty great.”

Elsewhere on For Christmas, Shires channels everything from lustful whimsy (“A Real Tree This Year”) to glorious catharsis (“Let’s Get Away”) to heavy-hearted longing (on the quietly devastating “Slow Falling Snow”). “What I wanted to do with this record was capture all of my feelings about Christmas, and I’ve still got more feelings to go—it’s so fun I might do it again,” says Shires. “I hope it helps people know that all the feelings are okay, that it’s all right to feel down on Christmas when there’s so much celebrating going on around you. And at the same time I just wanted to give everyone some Christmas songs they haven’t already heard 200,000 times before, and hopefully get them all to sing along.”

Customer service –4 stars. Vacuum, 5 stars
Size: 11S MAX, Size: 11S MAX
I received the wrong remote control for this product. It doesn't work with the vacuum at all. I called Eufy customer support twice. The 1st time, after I told them the issue with the remote, they would put me on a 3 minute hold, come back and ask me the same question. This happened 3 times. They then asked me for my email address so I could send them the picture of the remote. They told me to stay on hold but the call disconnected and I never received the email to send them the pictures. The 2nd time I called them I told them the same issue with the remote, they put me on a 25 minute hold and they never came back. I instead received an automated survey message to let them know how they did. They did poorly. Massive waste of time. I didn't want to return the whole vacuum just because of the remote. It's refurbished and the vacuum itself works very well! All I need is the correct remote.

My favorite robot vacuum! Works awesome!!
Size: 11S MAX, Size: 11S MAX
Eufy is by far my favorite robot vacuum brand we had one for several years and it did amazing with everything from dust to hair and even rocks didn’t phase it! It is super easy to set up, turn on, the settings are very user friendly and emptying the dust bin is super simple! They are very powerful but also compact and can fit in smaller places so that’s great for us and even when I don’t think there’s much on the floor it always gets full! You honestly can’t beat the price for how great these awesome little vacuums work definitely get your value for your money! I was a little skeptical getting the refurbished or Like-New one but I am super impressed so far! So grateful for tools like this to have around that are great at lending a hand 🤩

Sort of OK Budget model
Size: 11S MAX
I'm giving this model 5 stars because at this price, especially "renewed," it's a great robo vac. It is NOT anywhere near the hands-off level of other machines. It can't map the rooms, bumps its way around fairly successfully, but needs frequent hands on to fix something. In my case, with 2 long-haired cats, the most frequent issue is tangled hair in the roller. The machine stops dead and sends out 4 beep distress sounds for a while, then shuts down. Also, the remote seems to work only in line of sight, so if Eufy is stuck somewhere you can't see, and you were out, to find it you'll have to hunt with your eyes. Nevertheless, if your funds are limited, top choice. Update: After 6 months of usage, I'm giving it only 3 stars. Problems: 1) if you have long-haired cats (I do) their hair clogs the roller fairly quickly. After a while, no matter how well you clean the hairs out, you have to replace the roller entirely as hair seems to get inside it and cause the machine to stop working entirely. 2) the remote works only if you can see Eufy and it can "see" you. If it gets stuck in some place out of sight, lots of luck finding it. 3) when told to go to home base and recharge, it bumps around for a long time trying to find the way home. Bottom line: Where it vacuums the rug/floor is clean, but it takes a lot of baby sitting. Definitely not first choice unless funds are really tight.

Great value for money
I live in a smaller space (sub 1000 square foot apartment) and most of our floors are hard wood, with a couple of rugs thrown in for good measure. Over the years we've had numerous robotic vacuum cleaners from various manufacturers. Our needs with this one were simple. We wanted a device that was controllable via app and virtual assistant (Alexa, google home, etc.). The ability for the device to map our living space and for us to name rooms and choose which rooms. to vacuum in any given session was a deal breaker. I wasn't looking for a device with a built in mop - though this turned out to be a huge boon, and self-emptying the bin was not important to me (this device does not have a docking station that allows for self-emptying; if that is important to you then look elsewhere). The device looks much like all previous robotic vacuum cleaners that we purchased. As does the dock. Setup was extremely simple - I downloaded the app, scanned the barcode sticker on the top of the device, and it walked me through the rest. Didn't take more than 2 minutes. I followed the instructions in the app to map my space and a few minutes (I live in a small space) all of our rooms were mapped, named and ready to go. This was about as seamless a process as it could have been. Adding the device to my virtual assistants (Alexa and Google Assistant, for now) was very straightforward and the app provided excellent instructions (with screenshots) for both. I exclusively use google assistant for this device as the commands are much cleaner. I simply say "Google, clean the Living room" and the living room is vacuumed. I can even chain commands "Google, clean the Living Room and the Kitchen" and it will selectively clean the mentioned rooms. Alexa's commands were a bit more arduous to use/remember (something along the lines of "Alexa, please ask Roborock to...." - I honestly can't even remember). I believe this to be a result of how Alexa's skills work, and outside of the control of Roborock. The vacuum cleaner cleans hard wood floors and rugs very well and I've yet to encounter a case where the floors were not spotless after a cleaning session. I can't speak to thicker carpet since we do not have any, but I'm really impressed by the cleaning and the bin in this device appears to be larger than previously owned devices because it lasts a few sessions before needing to be emptied. Mopping. I did not buy this device for its mopping capabilities but I'm really glad to have them. I read other reviews that suggested that the mopping was not useful, but I strongly disagree. Perhaps if you had a big mess, or sticky floors, then the (wetted) pad that drags along the ground when cleaning could not clean up sufficiently but when used more in a maintenance mode (i.e. I utilize the mop *every* time I turn on the vacuum) it keeps the floors nice and clean. Is it as powerful as higher end mopping devices? Absolutely not. Does it keep the floors nice and clean? Absolutely. What you need will largely influence your perception of the mop but to me this is a great add-on when used frequently. Finally, the ability to schedule vacuum session has been wonderful. Within the Roborock app I set up routines to clean various areas of my apartment on schedule. For instance, I schedule the vacuum to clean the Kitchen and Dining Room every morning after breakfast (8am) and every evening after dinner (7pm). The vacuum takes care of the rest and in a house with children this kind of scheduled and automatic maintenance greatly reduces crumbs and mess. This is a very cost effective device that feels like more of a luxury than I could have expected. It fits my needs perfectly and I absolutely love it.
