Alphonse de Lamartine was an early 19th-century French writer and politician.He was mostly known for his poetry, but in 1854 he published a book on thehistory of Turkey. In this book, “Histoire de la Turquie” explores the lifeand work of Muhammad, mystic conversations with God, discovering who God is andwhether he exists or not, Muslim prayers, and more.
Lamartine highly admired the prophet Muhammed and is quoted as saying,
“who could dare to compare any great man in modern history with Muhammed?…This man moved not only armies, legislation, empires, peoples and dynasties,but altars, gods, religions, ideas, and beliefs and souls… As regards allstandards by which human greatness may be measured, we may well ask, is thereany man greater than he.” (Lamartine, History of Turkey)
