A Musical Journey Through Nordic Myth
Building the musical identity of Rend's world from the ground up was a daunting task, but Neal Acree found inspiration in unexpected places. As players start in the afterlife with nothing and must craft survival tools from their surroundings, Acree reached for older and less refined sounding instruments like the Hardanger fiddle, Hurdy Gurdy, Viola Da Gamba, and Nyckelharpa. These instruments' resonant qualities evoke the feeling of ancient machines built from wood and string.
A highlight of the soundtrack is the collaboration with Einar Selvik of the Norwegian folk band Wardruna. Einar provided powerful vocals for several tracks, setting them to old Norse poetry. Acree also worked with many incredible soloists, most of whom had never worked on a video game score before.
Over the two years of working on this score, the scope of the music expanded significantly. Initially focused on smaller, more primitive-sounding pieces, the game's world grew into a lush and varied landscape, leading to the inclusion of the City of Prague Philharmonic, Celtic-influenced instruments, and a Bulgarian choir. This score borrows from cultures worldwide, giving them an otherworldly setting that enhances the game's rich narrative.
