Supports healthy joints: Green-lipped mussels contain a unique Omega-3 fatty acid not found in fish oil called ETA. This omega-3 fat is known for its ability to support a balanced inflammatory response, which is especially beneficial for dogs with joint issues.

Better bioavailability: Unlike fish oil, the omega fats in green lipped mussel oil are encapsulated in phospholipids. Phospholipids easily merge with cell membranes and protect the fats from oxidation, so a higher amount of beneficial fats reach your dog's cells where they're needed. A 1997 study published in Inflammopharmacology states phospholipids make Green Lipped Mussel Oil 158x more effective than fish oil.

Green lipped mussel oil

Green lipped mussel oil, derived from the New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus), stands out among marine oils for its unique composition of omega-3 fatty acids, including a rare form known as eicosatetraenoic acid (ETA). This particular omega-3 is highly effective at balancing the inflammatory response, potentially offering more benefits than those found in other marine oils like fish oil, which primarily contain EPA and DHA.

Additionally, green lipped mussel oil contains a variety of other lipids and compounds that contribute to its health benefits, including phospholipids, which are better absorbed by the body, and glycosaminoglycans, which support joint health.

The phospholipids in green-lipped mussel oil improve the bioavailability of omega-3 fatty acids, meaning the body can absorb and utilize these beneficial nutrients more efficiently. Phospholipids form a major component of cell membranes and can easily merge with cells, facilitating the efficient absorption of omega-3s into the body. Phospholipids also encapsulate fragile omega-3 fatty acids, protecting them from degradation in the digestive system. This means a higher proportion of beneficial fats can reach the cells and work more effectively than the triglyceride form commonly found in fish oil.

Ahiflower (Buglossoides arvensis) oil

Ahiflower oil boasts large levels of stearidonic acid (SDA) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), two fatty acids with notable health benefits. SDA, an omega-3 fatty acid, is efficiently converted by dogs into eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), supporting a normal inflammatory response, cardiovascular health and potentially enhancing brain function. GLA, a healthy omega-6 fatty acid, also plays a crucial role in promoting a healthy inflammatory response and is particularly beneficial for skin health. The unique combination of SDA and GLA in ahiflower oil makes it a powerful nutritional supplement.

Why is there ahiflower in Safe-Sea?

Green lipped mussels grow on ropes in the clean waters of New Zealand. They absorb healthy amounts of phytoplankton, the only food source they need. Green lipped mussels do not share resources with other marine life. Their food source is sustainable as phytoplankton only need sunlight to survive!

Ahiflower is a natural plant. It is rich in GLA (gamma linolenic acid) which supports skin and joint health.

Astaxanthin is the “King of Antioxidants”. It is blood red in color and produced from microalgae.

Is there a lot of EPA in Safe-Sea?

While fish oil contains a lot of EPA, green lipped mussel oil contains a smaller amount. However, the phospholipids in green lipped mussels make the EPA much more bioavailable, so it’s not accurate to compare the amounts of EPA in each oil. GLM oil is also the only significant source of EPA’s precursor fat, ETA. This allows your dog’s body to easily convert only as much EPA as he needs, which we feel is safer and more natural.

Can I just use powdered or fresh mussels instead?

Although we use GLM powder in Hip & Joint, Safe-Sea is a source of omega fats. GLM oil is a far more concentrated source of fats - your dog would need 15X more powder to get the same amount of beneficial omega fats.

Also, many green lipped mussel powders have healthy fats removed. The leftover powder is sold as pet supplements but is missing the important fatty acids. And, by the way, the GLM powder we use in Hip & Joint is tested to contain a high, natural fat content. We would never use discarded GLM “meal.”
