The reduced spine length makes the deep green colour of the plant's ribs more visible and prominent, offering a stark contrast to the yellow areoles. It is a collector's favourite known in Japan as "Togenashi Kinshachi," offering the classic architectural barrel shape with a smoother texture.

Like its long-spined cousin, it needs bright, direct light to keep the plant symmetrical and prevent elongation. Use a specialized cactus compost with added gravel or pumice for maximum drainage and aeration. Water only when the potting mix is completely dry, as overwatering is the fastest way to kill it; it prefers to remain on the dry side.
