St. James, also known as James the Greater, was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. St. James is associated with fishing primarily because, before becoming an apostle of Jesus Christ, he was a fisherman by trade. He, along with his brother John, was called by Jesus while they were mending their fishing nets by the Sea of Galilee. This moment is significant in the Gospels, symbolizing the transition from their work as fishermen to becoming "fishers of men," spreading Jesus' teachings and bringing people to the faith. The fishing background of St. James and other apostles highlights their humble origins and the transformative power of Jesus' call to follow Him. This association with fishing has persisted through Christian tradition, making St. James a patron saint of fishermen and often depicted with fishing-related symbols.
