House of Debt: How They (and You) Caused the Great Recession, and How We Can Prevent It from Happening AgainThe Great American Recession resulted in the loss of eight million jobs between 2007 and 2009. More than four million homes were lost to foreclosures. Is it a coincidence that the United States witnessed a dramatic rise in household debt in the years before the recession that the total amount of debt for American households doubled between 2000 and 2007 to $14 trillion? Definitely not. Armed with clear and powerful evidence, Atif Mian and Amir Sufi

The Great American Recession resulted in the loss of eight million jobs between 2007 and 2009. More than four million homes were lost to foreclosures. Is it a coincidence that the United States witnessed a dramatic rise in household debt in the years before the recession-that the total amount of debt for American households doubled between 2000 and 2007 to $14 trillion? Definitely not. Armed with clear and powerful evidence, Atif Mian and Amir Sufi reveal in House of Debt how the Great Recession and Great Depression, as well as the current economic malaise in Europe, were caused by a large run-up in household debt followed by a significantly large drop in household spending.

Though the banking crisis captured the public's attention, Mian and Sufi argue strongly with actual data that current policy is too heavily biased toward protecting banks and creditors. Increasing the flow of credit, they show, is disastrously counterproductive when the fundamental problem is too much debt. As their research shows, excessive household debt leads to foreclosures, causing individuals to spend less and save more. Less spending means less demand for goods, followed by declines in production and huge job losses. How do we end such a cycle? With a direct attack on debt, say Mian and Sufi. More aggressive debt forgiveness after the crash helps, but as they illustrate, we can be rid of painful bubble-and-bust episodes only if the financial system moves away from its reliance on inflexible debt contracts. As an example, they propose new mortgage contracts that are built on the principle of risk-sharing, a concept that would have prevented the housing bubble from emerging in the first place.

Thoroughly grounded in compelling economic evidence, House of Debt offers convincing answers to some of the most important questions facing the modern economy today: Why do severe recessions happen? Could we have prevented the Great Recession and its consequences? And what actions are needed to prevent such crises going forward?

Good length, nice and comfy!
Fit Type: 33" Inseam, Size: Medium, Color: Army Green
Update after wearing on international trip: I still love these pants, but something about the high waist doesn’t look great on me if I wear a shorter length or cropped top (usually what I wear with high waisted pants). The waistband is too wide, and it looks unflattering. I may try to get it altered (again) to have a thinner waistband, but not eager to spend any more on these than I already have. 😭 Original review: I love these pants….I really wanted a natural fiber pant that wasn’t ankle length (I’m 5’8”)! I do NOT like that so so so many pants (from some of my favorite name brands but especially here on Amazon also) are “high waters”. These are a tad long at 33” (they didn’t have the 31” in size M in the color I wanted), but I will get them hemmed. I am also long waisted and don’t usually like wide waistbands, but this waistband doesn’t bother me, and they look great on. They did not seem to shrink after washing, and I even put them in the dryer on low for about 10 minutes (I wasn’t brave enough to go longer), and they did not shrink much. I was hoping they might shrink a tad in length. They must run a tad large, since I am a bit heavy right now, but they aren’t too tight (like so much of my wardrobe is at the moment). They are very comfortable, and I’m glad to have some pants to wear when I travel.

Nice!
Fit Type: 33" Inseam, Size: Medium, Color: White
Surprisingly nice. Fit is good and just a bit long. I expected shrinkage, however, after washing in cold water and drying warm, there is none that I could see. They wash nicely and don't need an iron, at least in the white version that I ordered.

Perfect material for comfort & offering different lengths for taller women!
Fit Type: 33" Inseam, Size: Medium, Color: Black
Great pants with different lengths. I love these pants& being 5”8 I wanted a longer length for wearing heels so the33 inch long works great. I plan on dry cleaning to keep them looking new! I now own 4 pairs & waiting for more colors to be available in the long length.

Great quality, a bit frumpy
Just ok. Probably should have returned these as I feel a bit like a grandma when I wear them, So they hang in my closet. Not super flattering but nice quality and fabric. Thickness is perfect. Style just isn’t for me but comfy
