Mammillaria elongata cristata is commonly referred to as the 'brain cactus' due to its intricate and curvy growth pattern. Interestingly, this unique shape is actually a result of damage during the plant's youth, where cells at the injury site rapidly multiply, causing the twisted appearance. In cultivation, this natural occurrence is intentionally recreated, resulting in the fan-like growth of the houseplant. Typically reaching only 6 inches (15 cm) in height, these plump plants have a waistband width of 12 inches (31 cm) and thrive in rocky areas and crevasses in Central Mexico. As they mature, they develop into a column of stems with smaller offsets, sporting closely packed areoles with various-sized spines, including fine, hair-like ones. Though green in color, the fuzzy spines give the plants a grayish hue.
