This is a book by an educator intended for use by other educators. It is designed to be handed out to a class of 30+ middle school boys and girls (some of whom may not really want to be there) in a 45-minute- long introductory elective class. The design of this book allows teachers to engage the wide variety of students one finds in a public-school class. Over the past 20+ years I have noticed that most students will not take the time to read printed instructions (really, who does these days?), but can and will follow visual examples. This book makes use of that observation.
While I have used these tutorials day-in and day-out for nearly 20 years (with over 2,000 5th-8th grade students), I don't simply hand them out and expect the students to do it on their own. I would suggest that the teacher study these tutorials beforehand and even make them along with the students on a display device.
Additionally, these tutorials are meant as starting points Ð I generally require my students to make two or three changes to each program for full credit. Without doubt your students will discover new and interesting things to do with Scratch that you did not envision. Encourage and praise them when they do this. Such self-expression is what programming is really all about.
