The Blackmagic Design Spares - UltraStudio 4K 2 - PCB Rear is the secondary internal circuit board for the second-generation UltraStudio 4K. While the Main PCB handles the heavy video processing, the Rear PCB acts as the physical interface and signal distribution hub for the vast majority of the unit's professional inputs and outputs.

High-Density I/O Management

The UltraStudio 4K 2 is a 1RU rackmount device known for its extensive connectivity. Because the rear of the unit is packed with connectors, this PCB is specifically engineered to manage signal integrity across multiple formats. Replacing this board is the primary fix for units with physically broken BNC connectors, "fried" ports due to static discharge, or signal loss on specific analog or digital lines.

The Rear PCB typically supports:

  • 6G-SDI Inputs/Outputs: Providing the physical BNC paths for SD, HD, and Ultra HD up to 2160p30.

  • HDMI Connectivity: Houses the HDMI input and output ports for connecting to monitors and consumer cameras.

  • Analog Video: Managing the Component, Composite, and S-Video breakout connections.

  • Audio Interfaces: Handling the balanced XLR analog audio, AES/EBU digital audio, and the RS-422 deck control port.

Bridge to the Main Logic

The Rear PCB is connected to the Main PCB via a series of high-speed ribbon cables or a bridge connector. It acts as the "gatekeeper," receiving raw electrical signals from the outside world and prepping them for the FPGA processors on the main board. It also contains the necessary protection circuitry (such as ESD diodes) to prevent minor electrical surges from the cables from reaching the more expensive main processing chips.

Identifying the Generation 2

It is critical to ensure you are sourcing the "Generation 2" version of this spare. While the original UltraStudio 4K and the UltraStudio 4K 2 look nearly identical from the outside, the internal PCB architecture changed to accommodate higher bandwidths and improved 6G-SDI performance.

  • Gen 1: Often limited in 4K frame rates and uses older internal bus architecture.

  • Gen 2: Features updated 6G-SDI components for more reliable 4K/UHD 30p workflows.

Key Features

  • Genuine Blackmagic Component: Guaranteed to fit the 1RU UltraStudio 4K 2 chassis perfectly.

  • Modular Repair: Allows for the replacement of damaged ports without discarding the expensive main processing board.

  • Signal Shielding: Designed to minimize crosstalk between the high-frequency digital SDI signals and the sensitive analog audio/video paths.

  • Ruggedized Mounting: Built with reinforced soldering points for the BNC and XLR connectors to withstand frequent cable changes.

Technical Installation Note

Replacing the Rear PCB is a labor-intensive process that requires a near-total teardown of the unit.

  • Connector Alignment: When installing the new board, all BNC, XLR, and HDMI ports must be perfectly aligned with the rear metal faceplate before the internal screws are tightened.

  • Ribbon Cable Seating: You must ensure that the high-density cables connecting the Rear PCB to the Main PCB are seated squarely; a slight tilt in these cables can cause intermittent signal "glitches" or total device failure.

  • Port Nut Tension: Ensure the hex nuts on the BNC connectors are tightened correctly to provide a solid ground to the chassis, which is essential for reducing signal noise.

The Power of Story in the Information Age
Format: Hardcover
After reading John Inazu's first book 'Confident Pluralism', I thought this might be a deeper foray into the legal/cultural difficulty of living faithfully in a pluralistic society. Instead, Inazu and Keller do something different. They challenge us to listen to stories of folks seeking to embody the principles of 'confident pluralism'. Does it offer easy answers? No. However, it does offer us a window into the rich ways that God can move us, transform us and position us for His purposes in communities where we might have deep disagreements. Overall, these stories of small and large acts of faithfulness to exemplify Christ's humility, patience and tolerance were deeply encouraging to person that constantly tries the patient of a God whose love he does not deserve. Very thankful to Inazu and Keller for organizing this. This is an important conversation in an acrimonious age where we falsely substitute information/vital statistics for people/real relationship.

easily accessible stories for engaging the culture
Format: Kindle
Inazu gathers stories of Christians seeking to engage the broader culture while maintaining their faithful beliefs. I appreciate the varied perspectives, though not agreeing with all, but then his four categories as the beginning of practicing this. That one line demonstrated a humility that I appreciated. This brings practical application into a narrative form that should be easily accessible

A Breath of Fresh Air
Format: Hardcover
In a world that is filled with Christian books on how to defeat culture or to escape from it this book is a breath of fresh air. In the 10 years that I have worked with young people one of the hardest concepts to get across to them is that their work matters. And even beyond that, how do we work with or partner with people who are different than me? How do we work together for a common good? That they have opportunities to engage the world around them. This book helps to give words to what that looks like. Not only is it filled with diverse writers, it doesn't give easy answers but ones of hope. I am grateful for this work and will share it with any college senior, young adult, and parishioner that I can. BUY THIS BOOK!
