Look Inside the Book
There was a prophecy that when a mule would ascend the throne, empires would fall. And they did. Get ready to be hooked by the complete story of his life -- and learn about one of history's most famous kings, who appears in the Bible as well! After an unsuccessful attempt to kill him as a child, Cyrus became king of the Medes and Persians, and set about creating a great empire. Whether fighting his grandfather, Croesus the unlucky Lydian king, Babylon, or the fierce Scythians, Cyrus demonstrated a combination of shrewdness, courage, and ruthlessness that would inspire legends.
This thrilling biography—written by Jacob Abbott and newly edited for younger readers—offers a glimpse into the life of a man who created the Persian empire and sent the Jews back to Jerusalem. Cyrus was the subject of many legends, but his story needs to be known by all who wish to properly understand the background of Scripture.
Cyrus is part of Makers of History, a 19th century biography series by two brothers—Jacob and John S.C. Abbott. Reprinted by Canon Press, these biographies have been edited and brought up-to-date for readers twelve and up. Not only are these editions given vintage style paperback covers, but they also include introductions that explain where these men and women fit into the timeline of history.
From the Book:
"Cyrus was the founder of the ancient Persian Empire, perhaps the wealthiest the world has ever seen. This empire is an extraordinary example of that strange part of human nature which causes men to keep a royal family in total power over themselves for centuries, submit to endless humiliations on their behalf, and commit the most atrocious crimes at their command." -From the book
