Omega-6 and Omega-3 are Essential Fatty Acids involved with producing life's energy. Pets often have a dietary deficiency in Essential Fatty Acids due to a high intake of animal fats. These Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids can promote skin and coat health, including relief of skin dryness, dandruff and psoriasis caused by a lack of high-quality Essential Fatty Acids. Omega Fatty Acids are thought to help both skin and coat by improving cell membrane function-essentially lubricating skin tissue from the inside. Proper levels of Essential Fatty Acids are also associated with mood and mental function.
The Essential Fatty Acids, consisting of alpha-linolenic acid (Omega-3) and linoleic acid (Omega-6), are substances that cannot be manufactured in your pet's body, and thus must be taken in as supplements of through high-EFA foods in order to sustain health. It is the highly reactive nature of these fats that makes them so fundamental.
