This converter outputs stereo (2-channel) RCA only. For 5.1 pass-through, you need an AV receiver with Dolby Digital decoding.
Q: My TV has both optical and HDMI ARC — which should I use for better audio?
HDMI ARC (if your amplifier supports it) is better — carries higher-quality audio and enables volume control via TV remote. Use optical only if HDMI ARC isn't available.
