History of a Takeover: The U.S. Naval Base at Guant‡namo BayU. S. imperialism has put its claws all over the world in its race for the capture of markets and neocolonies. U.S. imperialism has put its claws all over the world in its race for the capture of markets and neocolonies. For centuries, it has set its sights on Cuba to capture and actually annex its territory into the union -- and in doing so has manoeuvred with exploitative declarations such as the Monroe Doctrine, laws imposed onto Cuba such as the Platt Amendment, and the treaties such as that of 1934. Since the Platt Amendment, which was adopted by Cuba only upon the threat of war by the U.S., it has been state policy of the imperialists to implement military bases inside Cuba; at the time the base at Guantanamo was established to gain a centre to subjugate the other countries of the Caribbean. In the Revolution, it was used as a terrorist centre of the fascist Batista, gaining armaments to drop bombs on villages and other residential areas. Since the Revolution defeated the old power and established the people's state power, it has been used as a centre to scare the Revolution into submission. Cuba was not and is not scared; on the contrary, it demands the U.S. cease their occupation of Cuban territory, establishes in the international arena that the "treaties" the imperialists call upon for "legitimate rights to the territory" is null due to the disallowment in international law of threats in the process of signing treaties. Since the writing of this book, they have even established torturous death camps there filled with people never given a trial -- one of the greatest violations of the very "human rights" values they so cherish in words. Rather than terrifying Cuba with such manoeuvrings, in actuality, Cuba terrifies the U.S., which knows very well that it is an example of the high road of civilization.
