Raw Pu-erh Ancient Single Tree is a sheng (raw) pu-erh tea made from leaves harvested from 100+ year ancient single tea trees (百年古树单株) in the Xigui area of Yunnan Province, China. "Ancient single tree" means the leaves come from individual old-growth trees rather than plantation rows — these trees have deep root systems that draw minerals from the soil differently, producing leaves with a more layered, concentrated character.

What it tastes like

The first thing you'll notice is the citrus-like brightness — unusual for a pu-erh, and one of the things that makes Xigui teas stand out. Behind that, there's an uplifting energy to each sip and a long, sweet aftertaste that builds as you continue brewing. This is a tea that changes across infusions: the early cups are bright and aromatic, the middle cups develop more body and depth, and the later cups turn soft and sweet. If you brew gongfu style, you can get up to 15 infusions from a single session.

Brewing guide

Western style: Use 1g per 250ml teapot with 90-100°C water. Steep for 3 minutes. You'll get up to 4 infusions this way.

Gongfu style (recommended): Use 6g per 150ml gaiwan or teapot. Pre-warm the vessel, then use boiling water. Start with 10-second steeps for the first 5 infusions, adding 10 seconds from the sixth onwards. Up to 15 infusions. This method gives you the full range of what these old-tree leaves can do.

Joanne's tip

This is the pu-erh I bring out when someone at our Tea Bar says they want to understand what "ancient tree" actually means in practice. The difference from plantation pu-erh is something you can taste — there's a depth and a lingering quality that stays with you. It's the kind of tea I'd recommend to someone who already enjoys raw pu-erh and wants to explore what higher-end single-origin tastes like. Spring 2022 first flush — still quite young, so it has room to develop if you want to set some aside.

Tea profile

Taste: Citrus notes, uplifting, sweet aftertaste
Type: Post-fermented tea (raw/sheng pu-erh)
Tree Type: 100+ year ancient single tree (百年古树单株)
Origin: Xigui, Yunnan Province, China
Oxidation: Minimal — naturally post-fermented over time
TCM Property: Cool, becoming more neutral with aging (凉性,随陈化趋中性)
Harvest: First flush, Spring 2022
Ingredients: 100% loose leaves from ancient trees
Weight: 30g
Caffeine: High
No artificial flavours, colours or preservatives.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Like all raw pu-erh, this tea will continue to develop and mellow with age if stored properly — many drinkers enjoy watching the flavour change year to year.

Quality shoe but with a slight squeak.
Size: 10 Wide, Color: Burgundy Polished Full Grain
Nice shoes with the classic Penny Loafer design. Fit was better than another brand I tried. Only reason not 5 starts is disappointment due to a slight squeak at times when walking.

Exact item ordered, quick delivery
Size: 9.5, Color: Black Polished Full Grain
I ordered these black Cole Haan penny loafers for casual wear with jeans, khakies, and even business casual with slacks and a jacket. They've always worked perfectly for these uses. The Cole Haan version is the most versatile and still meets my sophisticated look criteria. I wear a 9 1/2 M with almost all other shoes. I have found Cole Haan to run slightly wider and slightly shorter. This fit will work with thin and no socks and a little loose in width. . I'd likely order a 10 N next time. I tend to forget this but it runs consistent with me for Cole Haan. 5 stars for the shoe and service. My bad on the slightly off fit.

Poor quality control - maybe outlet store leftovers
Size: 11.5, Color: Burgundy Polished Full Grain
The two shoes were not the same size. They were both labeled 11 1/2 but one shoe was larger than the other and the fit was poor. I returned the first pair and ordered a replacement. This time the shoes were close to the same size but too loose and the left one has sewing issues. I've bought Johnston & Murphy for years because of the quality. These were to replace an existing pair of burgundy penny loafers that have finally worn out (even after several heal/sole replacements). That is the expected quality. I suspect Nashville Shoe Warehouse may be handling shoes that didn't measure up for the quality; more like an outlet mall than getting the J&M quality I've come to expect. Update: went to Johnston & Murphy site to buy "direct" from the manufacturer. There were several recent reviews where the shoes were long and didn't fit properly. Genesco - please step up the manufacture / crafting of these classic shoes to the level of quality they used to have.

My husband enjoys wearing these shoes. Very classy looking. They fit well. They arrived quickly. He liked them so much he ordered another pair in a different color which have worked out just as well.
