For decades, students nearing the end of open-water certification classes have completed check-out dives at the quarry-rock jetties that stabilize the entrance from the Gulf to St. Andrew Bay and Port Panama City. Following classroom instruction and pool sessions, new divers visiting the jetties gain introduction to life forms they have never seen before including species typically associated with coral reefs. Here to be found are blue tangs, yellow tangs, damselfish, blennies, the homely toadfish and the aptly named lookdown. Schools of mullet pluck billowy tufts of algae clinging to the rocks, and striped sheepshead, looking like so many convicts, pass by. Soon, these divers will be ready to experience the many sunken ships and other artificial reefs located off Panama City Beach’s shores. The Black Bart and the USS Strength are among the most familiar vessels in a collection that is often added to by artificial reef programs and with bed tax dollars. Barnacles and anemones are among the first species to colonize a structure, followed by baitfish and jacks, then bottom huggers such as groupers and sea bass. PCB is home to numerous wreck sites that act as artificial reefs in the Gulf of Mexico. These wreck sites range from sunken ships to sections of old bridges that have been dismembered and towed miles offshore. Before these objects are sunk in their new permanent locations at the bottom of the sea, they are extensively cleaned and prepared to become a haven for marine life. Some of the popular wrecks here in Panama City Beach are the Black Bart, USS Strength, Red Sea, USS Chippewa, Femi (Twin) Tugs, and the USS Accokeek. Some of the iconic marine life you might find at these wrecks are the goliath grouper, loggerhead sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, and different schools of amberjack, red snapper, and other species of fish.

In addition to the wreck sites, another popular diving site here in PCB is the jetties. The jetties are these walls of large boulders that line the pass, where the boats and ships can enter the bay, and are teaming with different fish and other marine life like the spiney lobster and the blue angelfish.
