Most hats are built for one thing. The Richardson 909 McKenzie Booney was built for everything. Named after the McKenzie River in Western Oregon — a stretch of wild, fast-moving water that demands respect from anyone on it — the 909 is Richardson's answer to the question serious outdoor enthusiasts have been asking for years: why can't a sun hat actually perform? The answer, it turns out, is that it can. And the McKenzie proves it.

Performance Nylon That Works as Hard as You Do

Where most bucket hats reach for cotton canvas and call it a day, the 909 goes a different direction entirely. The McKenzie is built from 100% performance nylon with a water-repellent finish that sheds rain, spray, and sweat without soaking through and weighing you down. Nylon dries dramatically faster than cotton — a distinction that matters enormously when you're mid-river, mid-trail, or mid-downpour and need your gear to keep working rather than turn into a soggy liability. The unstructured build keeps the hat lightweight and packable, letting it compress flat into a pack or stuff into a pocket without holding a crease when you pull it back out.

Sun Protection You Can Actually Count On

The 909 features a 3" all-around brim and UPF 50+ protection — a combination that delivers genuine 360-degree sun coverage for the face, neck, and ears. This isn't a fashion brim designed to look good in photos. Three full inches of structured brim is enough to keep direct sun off your face at midday, protect the back of your neck on long stretches of exposed trail, and shield your ears during hours-long sessions on the water. The UPF 50+ rating means the fabric itself blocks the vast majority of harmful UV radiation — so even on the parts of your head the brim doesn't cover, the hat is working to protect you.

The Details That Make the Difference

Richardson didn't stop at fabric and brim. The 909 includes a Stay-Dri performance sweatband, an adjustable toggle chin strap, and silicone eyelets — three features that quietly separate it from every generic booney hat in its category. The Stay-Dri sweatband wicks moisture away from the forehead and manages it so it doesn't drip into your eyes during high-exertion activity. The toggle chin strap is the feature you don't think about until you need it — on a raft, in a headwind, or on a ridge where every gust wants to take your hat with it. And the silicone eyelets provide reliable ventilation without the rust risk that metal eyelets carry after repeated exposure to water and humidity.

A Hat That Decorates Beautifully

The clean, structured brim and smooth nylon crown make the 909 an excellent candidate for custom decoration. Richardson recommends patches, woven labels, and heat transfers as the ideal decoration methods for the McKenzie — techniques that respect the nylon construction and produce clean, durable results. For outdoor brands, fishing guide services, kayak outfitters, farm and ranch programs, conservation organizations, and corporate outdoor retreat programs, the 909 offers a decoration-ready canvas that looks premium and holds up to the kind of use your customers will put it through.

Who Reaches for the Richardson 909

The McKenzie has developed a loyal following among buyers who need their headwear to actually work. Fly fishing guides rely on it for full-day float trips where sun exposure is relentless and spray is constant. Hiking and backpacking programs reach for it because it packs flat and dries fast — two non-negotiables in the backcountry. Kayak and whitewater programs love the chin strap for obvious reasons. Agricultural workers and outdoor crews appreciate the full-brim coverage and the durability of the nylon build over long field seasons. And outdoor brands building premium merchandise programs choose the 909 because it photographs well and wears even better.

Available Colors and Sizing

The Richardson 909 McKenzie Booney is available in White, Charcoal, and Moss Green, in sizes S/M and M/L — a focused, outdoors-forward color palette that works across fishing, hiking, and lifestyle applications. The two-size structure gives buyers the ability to offer a proper fit across a range of head sizes, rather than defaulting to a one-size-fits-all approach that never quite fits everyone.

delightful read
Format: Kindle
What a delightful read. The characters are awesome, the plot was so good, I loved it. I was intrigued and it kept me wanting more. Told in multiple pov, the book sucks you in and doesn’t let go. I cannot wait to read the next book.

not bad
Format: Kindle
I loved the plot of this book. The characters just didn’t have a lot of depth. The connections and “love” just weren’t communicated very well in the writing. The author didn’t write the sweet psycho trope very well at all either. Lachlan was just a mess of a character.

A Beta Worth Rooting For
Format: Kindle
In Spare, Violet Fox flips the omegaverse on its head, giving us a Beta heroine determined to make her mark. Joining the Beta Trials to support her sick father, she's thrown into a pack that doesn't want her, especially the possessive Alphas. But here's the twist: their sweet Omega turns out to be her scent match. Cue the angst, forbidden tension, and a slow-burn romance that will make your heart ache in the best way. Violet Fox delivers an emotional, refreshing take on the genre, proving Betas aren't "spares." They're stars.

Beta, Alpha, Omega oh my!
Format: Kindle
Omegas are precious and given to Alphas & their packs... but the Betas want in too. To this end, the Beta government is rolling out its trial of assigning a Beta to each Alpha-Omega pack. But forcing a Beta into a pack where they are not wanted will not end well... Of course, no one expected the Omega to fall for the assigned Beta. Great read and cliffhanger

A familiar story, just with…..less.
Format: Kindle
So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
