The Arcanum is a 1998 book by Janet Gleeson telling the story of the invention of European porcelain and the start of the porcelain industry outside China and Japan.

The book details the events leading to the discovery of the formula for porcelain (the intended meaning of the book title), the ensuing start of the porcelain industry in Meissen, and its rapid spread to other places in Europe in the 18th century. The characters of the plot are:

Augustus, 1670-1733, (king of Poland as Augustus II the Strong, Elector of Saxony as Friedrich Augustus I, Grand Duke of Lithuania as Augustas II), who is desperate for a way to finance his spending and has hopes on the wonders of alchemy.

Johann Friedrich Böttger, 1682-1719, the teenage alchemist who gets imprisoned and forced, given the materials required, to come up with a reliable way to produce gold and who tries hard but ends up changing direction toward the search to find a commercially viable formula for porcelain, which in this period was more valuable than gold. Assisting Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus, a scientist who has already been experimenting with ways to make porcelain. Their approach, an attempt to bake clay at higher temperatures than had ever before been attained in European kilns, yielded the breakthrough that had eluded European potters for a century.

David Köhler, who learned porcelainmaking while assisting Böttger, and developed the first enamel colors for Meissen porcelain.

Samuel Stölzel, who learned porcelainmaking while assisting Böttger, escaped and helped start a rival porcelain factory in Vienna, recruited Herold, repented, returned with Herold and developed the enamel colors further.

Johan Gregor Herold, an ambitious artist, who developed the colors and patterns to decorate the early European porcelain.

Johann Joachim Kaendler, 1706 – 1775, a virtuoso sculptor/modeler who used the new material, porcelain, to invent an artform.

Dutch Palace, containing King Augustus' precious porcelain collection.

Meissen, German town near the Polish border, with a prison (Albrechtsburg) where Bøttger was locked up, which was later turned into a porcelain factory.

Great Sink Caddy
Color: Black, Color: Black
Great size and you can configure it to accommodate a range of soaps and gadgets. The brush holder can be moved to the outside for more storage area in the main basket. The little divider adjust across the wires and it stays in place. The stone bottom absorbs drips quickly and I haven’t noticed any discoloration on it. It stays in place on the sink edge. Perfect for my organization needs and keeps the area neat vs tossing the brushes on the ledge leaving water marks on the counter. It was packaged well and the coating seems good! I bought a cheaper one and it came bent, with the coating popped off in several places. This one is worth paying a little bit more for the quality!

Wonderful, roomy caddy
Color: Black
I don't usually write reviews, but this is a great product to share. This sink caddy is everything they say it is. The bottom drying stone protects the counter surface from getting wet and sponges, etc. dry in a reasonable amt. of time. I love the basket for tall items like brushes- enough room for two- and the removable partition to use however one wants. I debated getting this longer one, but I am glad I did because it fits quite a bit. I even use the one side with the partition for a spray bottle. It also looks very nice and feels like a quality product. I wasn't sure if the black metal would go well with my beige countertop, but it looks great. I highly recommend it.

This organizer is awesome!
Color: Black
This sink organizer works great! It fits everything I need to fit and works well on my countertop. The diatomaceous earth stone underneath collects all of the water and there is no puddling underneath. I love the divider because I can keep my sponge separate from my bottle of dish soap and brushes… 10 out of 10 would definitely recommend this item!

Go big
Color: Black
I had a very small holder that barely held anything, the I stumbled on this in the small size, which I almost bought because it was a little bigger than what I had. Then I saw this one and I'm glad I bought the larger one because it holds everything! I even bought a glass container for the dish soap. Fits perfectly in the space. I also like the idea of the stone to absorb water instead of it dripping in a tray that runs through a spout into the sink.
